tell me about kitchen rubbish bins

I'm planning a kitchen renovation - new kitchen will be IKEA units possibly with better doors.

But what is the best solution for kitchen rubbish and recycling within the cupboards?

at the moment, we have a big freestanding Brabantia pedal bin + one big recycling crate (council takes it mixed) plus a small foodwaste bin. and that works, but isn't pretty and there is no space for the freestanding bin in my new scheme.

if you have rubbish bins built in within the kitchen cupboards, how big are they? and does the lid seal shut when you close the cupboard door? and can you open the bin with one hand to put stuff in?

what should I be looking for? any advice would be great.

I can’t tell you the litre size, but our built in rubbish/recycling is back to back, and fits within a 600mm cabinet. There’s no lid, it’s two removable plastic bins that sit in a frame. There cupboard door looks like the cupboard that holds the integrated dishwasher- there’s nothing on the outsides to indicate what’s inside - you just pull it out. I line the rubbish half with a black bin bag and the plastic/glass half with a white bag. Both hold a decent amount. Food waste bin sits next to the sink.

My highly technical solution to this is two command hooks stuck to the inside of the cupboard door under the sink, from which we hang a small carrier bag (I buy the biodegradable ones for about £7 for 100).

I don't like bins on view- mine is in the cupboard and is pedal bin size. The lid flips up when the door is opened.
Re-cycling goes straight outside into the big recycling bins.
Food waste for compost sits in a little bin by the back door, waiting to go out

Oops - just realised I said I don't like bins on view..... but compost bin is small and tucked in behind the door 😀 so not visible from the main kitchen!

600m cabinet. Two bins rubbish and recycling. Shelf acts as lid when cupboard shut. Trays on shelf for paper recycling and bin liners.

At our last house we had lovely kitchen cabinets from Handmade Kitchens of Christchurch that we'd actually bought for the previous house but never fitted them. At the time of ordering I stupidly didn't consider bins and by the time we moved/came to fit the kitchen at the new place, the lead time was crazy.

So, my handy DH built two 400mm wide cupboards (one either side of the sink) with doors that resembled a pair of deep drawers (so two handles on each) and inside each he fitted a pair of lidded, pull-out bins. I think they were around £130 for each pair of 20L bins. As they pulled out the lids retracted and vice versa when being closed.

We're about to do the same in our new (cobbled together) kitchen, but with a bigger cupboard/bins this time 😉

I don't have better pics as we no longer live there, but the bin pull out cupboards made by DH are either side of the sink in the first one....

They had soft close mechanisms and the bottom handles were decorative only.

Following with interest as I’m trying to solve a similar problem.

For those of you with bins in cupboards where the shelf acts as a lid, how do you manage to stop the cupboard smelling? Or is that not as much of an issue as I’m assuming?

parietal · 31/12/2025 20:09

@DustyMaidenwhere did that kitchen come from? And does the shelf lid seal well enough to stop flies and smells?

Our kitchen is from Ikea and we have a built in bin unit. It’s in a normal 600 cabinet. Integrated. We have it beside the dishwasher and it’s close to the sink. It has 4 compartments. 2 large for waste & recycling and 2 small. I use one for the food/compost and the other one is yet to get a purpose.
I love it. It’s so clean and tidy.

These are similar to the ones we used @parietal. They come in a variety of sizes/combinations.

They have a lid rather than a shelf above and this stays in position as the bin(s) is pulled outwards when the door is opened like a drawer, similar to @Onefortheroad25. The bin(s) then fit snugly back under the lid when pushed back in, so no issues with odours/flies etc.

Ikea do a bin pull out unit for in their cabinets. In our store, it has a set up demo'd for each local borough (we all have a slightly different bin set up). So you will probably be able to get one set up for the number of bins you have.

I like the roll out ones that come out with the door, and have a self-lifting lid. I like Hafele, a good brand. I expect Blum also make them, I find those are the most reliable makes. You need good quality ball-bearing runners. A cage that fixes to the top and the bottom of the door will prevent it pulling out of shape. The buckets fit into the cage.

I don't favour a large 600mm one, it will tend to smell before it is full. Look for a set with two or three square buckets inside, one for glass, one for recycling, and one for general and food waste. The third one is usually bigger and needs to be emptied frequently. You can get replacement sets of buckets depending on your usage pattern. The set is usually not full height, so you can have a drawer above it.

LibertyLily · 01/01/2026 17:43

These are the actual ones we bought, but in a smaller size. Ours had two bins in each. We didn't have a drawer above though, as per my pics. Great quality as you'd expect from hafele.

This is exactly what we have too. Two bins in a frame which you pull out...it's so great not having a free standing bin.

We do this too. No bin to clean!
