Woodgrain UPVC windows

MovingSwiftlyOn · 21/12/2025 13:41

Looking at replacing our windows next year and see that UPVC with woodgrain is an option. I've not seen in real life yet but from online quite like the look, but DH thinks the woodgrain will attract the dirt more.
Has anyone chosen this and regretted it?
TIA

personally I would only ever go for proper wood frames. They last so much longer, add value to your home and look much nicer

I know white upvc isn’t great looking, but wood grain really does look cheap and naff irl.
Real wood frames need regular upkeep, fine if you can afford it, but it’s a bugger of a job if your are sanding, staining/painting yourself. Never again!

If I was younger then I would go for wooden windows, but I’m not and won’t have money to pay someone to paint them for me, hence the compromise of UPVC.

MovingSwiftlyOn · 21/12/2025 16:03

Thanks @YouDriveMeCrazyButICanDoThatMyself. I definitely need to see them irl!
I'm in exactly that position @Tattyhabitsand will not be able to look after wooden windows going forward.

I think woodgrain upvc is hideous. I wouldn't buy a house with it. If you have to have upvc I think white or perhaps black/grey is the only option. Fake wood always looks awful.

Have a look at the heritage type companies - eg Residence 9. They are pricy but look class.

ResusciAnnie · 21/12/2025 16:12

I automatically assumed you meant the dark brown wood grain which does indeed look cheap but had a google and up came a lot of cream/eggshell options. Many houses round here have put these windows in lately and they look lovely IRL! We’ve recently got new white windows to match those existing and then next door got black and their house looks SO much better. I wish we’d changed all our windows to something non-white-and-plasticky. Windows make a massive difference to a house!

We have woodgrain pvc in our house, installed very recently.

Bougainsillier · 21/12/2025 16:25

Our sage green pvc is wood grain. Looks so much better than smooth. Doesn’t need any more looking after; the grain isn’t deep.

MovingSwiftlyOn · 21/12/2025 16:57

Oh, golly, no! Definitely not fake wood!! I was looking at cream or white and wondering whether to go with woodgrain texture or not, so good to know you've not had problems @Bougainsillier
I will definitely have a look at Residence 9. The house would originally have had sash windows before it was 'modernised' in the 1980's by the previous owners, so we want to replace them with something in keeping at least!

Also, you could have a look at Timberlook or Evolution windows. They are more expensive than the bog standard UPVC but recreate the joints and proportions in traditional wood windows as far as possible.

Wooden windows don’t take that much upkeep. I had all of our front ones replaced with solid wood casements 15 yearrsss ago, and they’re still perfect, haven’t needed repainting yet.

they were factory painted before fitting if that makes a difference

putthekettleonn · 22/12/2025 03:22

I've seen some very good-looking ones at Home Show and renovation events. It's definitely worth having a look in person.

outdooryone · 22/12/2025 10:13

My last house was 'rosewood' fake wood / wood grain. They are only a stick on layer.
I painted over them and it looks really good.

Soony · 22/12/2025 13:23

I have them and wouldn't recommend. They fade with time and you end up having to paint them.
