Just moved into a new property and it has a gas meter in the front garden. The cover on the meter is a hard plastic and is very dirty but also very shiny/sparkly. It almost looks like it's covered all over in snail trail type of shiny. After I used it I realised my hands were covered in very tiny shards of whatever shiny stuff it's covered in, cue very itchy hands and a rash - I had to work at my hands with sellotape to pull out the shards. Anyone know what this is and what is the best/safest way for me to clean it/ remove whatever this is?

Might be fibreglass??

Mumblechum0 · 19/12/2025 00:51

Sounds like fibreglass. Not sure how to get rid of it, but ask chat got maybe?

Seconded. The fragments can embed in the skin, which causes irritation. Soap and water should help. If it doesn't, perhaps a call to the pharmacy?

Just looked it up and I think you're all right on the money.

When I got the shards out with sellotape the irritation eventually went away thankfully but it just means I can't touch the meter box.

I have a small toddler and now I'm wondering if I need to ask the landlord to replace the cover? Or would that fall under my responsibility?

You could just paint it if the landlord won’t replace it. It will seal the surface.

I don't think the landlord can do much with it, they belong to the gas folk I think
