What loft insulation?

My brother ( who is a vulnerable adult and lives alone) has a leak in his roof which is being fixed, but the insulating material is soaked and needs replacing. Wondering what to get- is the standard B&Q loft insulation roll good enough for the job?
Or is there a better product out there? thanks for any advice.

"standard" insultation is standard for a reason, it is what you standardly use.

We're in the process of getting our roof redone and replacing the insulation. I really wanted to love a natural product like sheeps wool, but have been put off by the risk of pests and the fire rating. We are going for Rockwool and some kind of foil product with air gaps (not strong on the technical detail). Which is fire proof, no chemicals and more cost effective.

You want b and q knauff eco insulation and at least 30cm deep. More if possible

Is it 30cm now? A few years ago it was 20cm!

Geneticsbunny · 17/12/2025 14:38

It's been 30cm recommended at least since we did ours in 2018

It’s actually 270mm 🤓 100mm between joists and 170mm cross laid on top. But if it’s just a DIY upgrade you can use whatever thickness is practical.

The off the shelf Knauf stuff is fine.

We recently got 300mm fibreglass wool insulation and it’s improved our house temp by 3C!

Thanks everyone for your helpful comments. B&Q Knauff it is. @Saisong I like to go green too if possible but the idea of moths nesting in the loft insulation is the stuff of nightmares. There was a moth infestation in the house only partly resolved by ripping out the living room carpet and replacing with LVT.

Pack up the yellow fibreglass and take it to the tip.

Put down brown mineral wool treated with Ecose. It is soft and does not shed irritant dust and fibres.

It is made by Knauf but often sold as an own brand. The wrapper will share "Ecose."

Thank
you Piglet. I’m going there tomorrow and will do exactly that- have hired a car and booked slot at the tip. I’ll look out for the mineral wool treated with Ecose
