Pedestrian crossing outside house

I’m so so upset tonight.
We live on a main road that is having raised cycle lanes put in. Construction has already started so it’s a done deal.

The plans have been altered slightly from when the council put them out for consultation and I’m now going to have a pedestrian crossing right outside my house.
I’m gutted. We live a good distance from traffic lights and bought for that reason, I didn’t want to live by lights and have a beep beep going all the time and listen to stop start traffic every time a pedestrian or cyclist wants to cross the road.

That’s now going to change and this is being forced on us.

I don’t know what to do. I’m so so sad. We have spare monthly income to move (around £2k a month spare after everything), although my husband doesn’t want to increase our mortgage.
Even if we did put the house on the market who’s going to want to buy it with pedestrian lights outside.

Help me feel better!

I don’t think you will notice it. If you have a driveway with parking up to four cars and a front garden, you definitely won’t. I’d regard a pedestrian crossing outside my house as a bonus.

Owlsandeagles · 15/12/2025 21:26

@Coconutter24yes they need to use a shared ‘north south’ cycle path into the village then the crossing outside my house is where they have to split, either carry on south or switch over the road to the north cycle lane.

the beeping on the one near my house goes off about 8pm so you never really hear it. It’s absolutely fine

I’ve not heard audible sounds on crossing for years. I don’t think they do them anymore. I would personally welcome a safe place for my children to cross right outside the front door. Would parking be an issue? I’m imagining you have no front garden so has to park on the street? Otherwise if you have a front garden and a big back garden, how much time would you spend sitting outside the house breathing in the fumes?

They do, beeping crossing installed at the rear of our house last year. They won't even turn the noise down. They told us they have to have the beeps unless it is so close to another crossing that the beeps could confuse people.

We have a patio, garden, green area behind the house and we hear it then pavement. I can even hear it in the front garden never mind the back garden.

I doubt it will cause many issues. I used to live opposite a train station with a road barrier that went down (with a lot of beeping) every 7 mins. You get used to it. There’s little you can do about it so best thing is to just accept that you’ll adapt, or move.

Pricelessadvice · 16/12/2025 07:17

How many pedestrians are you expecting??
I doubt you’ll notice it.

DiscoBeat · 16/12/2025 07:25

If you have kids then it will be a very reassuring thing to have

I still notice it, hard not to.

Write to your Councillor, MP and even the Prime Minister. This is unacceptable. You basically own the road by now and they should even pay you for the benefit of using it.

Seeline · 16/12/2025 11:26

If it's right outside your house, I think I'd be more worried about getting in and out of my drive, where delivery vehicles will be able to stop, and where visitors might be able to park.

This. How will this work if you have a crossing immediately outside your house?

GasPanic · 16/12/2025 11:36

The traffic fumes will probably be worse, as as lorries pull away they normally belch out black smoke. Hopefully it is not a main road.

I would be more worried about the fumes than the noise, and would take steps to seal off the front of the house while getting all the ventilation from the back.

Owlsandeagles · 16/12/2025 20:43

@SirChenjins@Seeline we have a drive big enough for 3/4 cars, so visitors normally park on our drive.
Delivery vehicles will have to park down the road away from the zig zags.

@GasPanicyes it is a main road which is why I’m so upset. It’s very different having vehicles just driving straight by your house as opposed to idling right outside the front door!
I’d never buy a house by traffic lights for that reason and I’m so pissed off this is being forced upon us.
I’d never buy my house now, so god knows how we’ll even be able to sell it .

What! Unless OP is going to now tell us it's a private road, then they don’t - it's a public highway for use by all.

That was sarcasm from that poster 😂

I meant, how will they get onto your driveway if there's a pedestrian crossing right outside your house?

Owlsandeagles · 16/12/2025 21:58

@SirChenjinsdriveway is on the left of the house. Crossing will be on the right opposite lounge/ front bedroom windows .
we will keep access to our drive
