quoted 16k kitchen feel awkward about declining this quote.

Just wondered if I'm out of touch with prices.

We have a small gallery kitchen in the North. We would need new appliances (dishwasher and oven), old kitchen taking out and skimming. Flooring, electrics, tiling the walls, and painting not included. Approx three strides of me across kitchen for size guide. All our choices are mid range, including appliances, quartz counter tops. No posh gadgets.

I was thinking maybe 10!

The bloke doing the quote was lovely, which is making me feel awkward about declining the quote since they put so much time into the design, but we definitely can't afford this.

If it's just me out of touch I guess we need to just save more!

Seems average to me. You don’t have to respond to a quote. Just don’t accept it.

LuckyNumberFive · 15/12/2025 19:24

"Our budget doesn't stretch that far, but thank you for the quote and should we revisit getting the kitchen done in the future I'll give you a call."

Ponderingwindow · 15/12/2025 19:25

you should be getting multiple quotes for a job that big. When we had our bathroom redone ended ended up going with the expensive quote. The reason why is because we had more confidence in that provider. the quality of the work ended up being leaves and bounds better than any work we had ever had before then we have no regrets.

FestiveBauble · 15/12/2025 19:25

How long have they said it will take and how many people? Honestly seems about right, labour, kitchen, quartz and appliances. Don’t forget as well the disposal of the waste from taking out the kitchen can cost a lot too!

I wouldn’t feel bad about declining, have you had any other quotes?

WonderingWanda · 15/12/2025 19:26

Have you only had one quote so far. Perfectly normal and reasonable to get a few quotes and prices will vary wildly between fitters / kitchen companies and depending on where you are in the country. Try builders as well as they can often be cheaper.

Monty27 · 15/12/2025 19:26

Who's fitting it

TheBeaTgoeson1 · 15/12/2025 19:26

Who Is the kitchen company?

TeenLifeMum · 15/12/2025 19:28

That sounds about right. Ours was 22k but also had a small utility and a second oven. Fitting will be about £8k. We had 3 quotes and they were all similar.

winewolfhowls · 15/12/2025 19:30

It's a small company a few towns away, they have great reviews locally. They do the fitting.

I hear great things about DIY kitchens on here but I'm wary about doing my own measurements and getting it wrong (I live alone so noone to correct me)!

Get more quotes, get a recommended kitchen fitter from a friend or family who did theirs in the last year or so. If you can't say no to a gooey eyed builder step aside for someone who can 🤣 certainly seems good value compared to London

FilterBubble · 15/12/2025 19:36

If it's 16k for something you don't much want, then it's a no brainer.

Willowskyblue · 15/12/2025 19:40

That sound high. I planned our kitchen on DIY’s online planner and had a builder install it, with all new appliances. It’s 5m x 2m. Came in under £10k.

Willowskyblue · 15/12/2025 19:41

Oh and that included putting in drainage under the kitchen floor so that an understairs loo could be put in at a later date.

Ineffable23 · 15/12/2025 19:46

I did my own kitchen rebuild, it was 10 years ago now, but we did the whole thing for about £1000 all in. Fridge and washing machine second hand. Cooker and dishwasher £600. Cabinets + doors plus worktop £400. We refused the cabinet carcasses where they were in decent nick. If I had needed new flooring as well it would probably have added £200 in materials and about another £150? for fitting. The old tiling was all just white so that was fine to leave.

I assume you'd have to double all that now. But I went with a block solid wood worktop that was reduced to £80 in B and Q etc. I actually get a lot of compliments on the kitchen so I think it's been a success.

I’d be getting multiple quotes and see who can give you the best price. One thing to bear in mind though is - don’t always go for cheap as it can end up expensive in the long run.

Yes, this is also what worries me, perhaps we would be better off saving for a few more months.

We are going to get three quotes too.

Tbh that doesn't sound a mile off. Mine has cost £18k, including the bits your quote excludes. And I have a small kitchen. I went for mid-range things price-wise.

Yes get a few quotes and you can save if you do lots yourself but something done entirely by others will cost.

daffodilandtulip · 15/12/2025 21:13

Ours is 2yrs old. Approx 5x5m. New appliances, tiled floor, wooden tops. Bought the kitchen and found a fitter myself. Midlands.

Under £6k.

Yes same here. Units from DIY kitchens, integrated appliances from AO, and fitting including rewiring and plastering the whole kitchen. Came to almost bang on £10k all in.

Many friends can’t believe what I paid. They went to the national big names and paid thousands upon thousands of pounds more than me for lower quality units.

Where abouts in the country are you?

How much was the fitting?

@winewolfhowls I'm going to get mine from DIY kitchens, they'll help you make sure you have everything you need.

the difficult part is finding a goid kitchen fitter at a reasonable oruce.

DIY showroom is great if you can get there

Get Wren / Howdens / Magnet to come
and measure and do a design for you. Then use their measurements and designs to buy the units from DIY instead.

IdaGlossop · 15/12/2025 21:22

Is the quote broken down, so you can see what of the £16,000 is labour, what appliances and what units? You need to see that so you can compare the quote. It does sound on the high side. I assume VAT is included in the total you have given.

HurdyGurdy19 · 15/12/2025 21:33

Ours is from DIY-Kitchens, and is 18 months old.

I think I read that they offer a design service now, but we got an independent kitchen designer to check our plan and measurements.

Our price from DIY, which included 8 AEG Integrated appliances, came to c£16,000 we paid £3,500 for quartz worktops, and £2,500 for an independent kitchen fitter.

Other quotes we had, which didn't include appliances, ranged from £26,000 to £33,000

We have a tiny kitchen. We had a Howdens top end kitchen. My dh fitted it. We got a discount but it still cost 12 grand! Everything is sooo expensive now.
