...would that be cheap and good

i did paint a floor white in a bedroom before and it was awful

but thought a sort of sludge colour might work

Green mud colour???

Do you wear your wellies up to bed?

How dark are the stairs and landing already?

mazzystar · 10/06/2008 17:48

Had my hall and stair painted in a mid grey in my old flat - it worked really well - quite neutral, dust disguising capabilities. Think it would work well if space not too cramped and plenty of natural light.

there is a large window half way up the stairs so surprisingly considering the house is not particularly light it is quite bright

there are brick shaped parquet ish old quarry tiles in the hall

white looks ok

or grey can look nice

sludge sounds awful, sorry

MinkyBorage · 10/06/2008 18:18

what is the floor, is it floorboards?

zippitippitoes · 10/06/2008 18:19

yes floor boards in original unreconstructed there used to be carpet in this house once state

No to the sludge, I would have said white.
On the other hand a friend of ours has got dark chocolate brown floorboards which look great, but the house is very light, and all the walls are white

zippitippitoes · 10/06/2008 18:21

i was thinking like this mist 2

or maybe slightly more yellow

That looks nice actually, you weren't doing it any favours describing it as sludge green though , if it's light and the walls are white it could look lovely. How about sanding and just varnishing them?

zippitippitoes · 10/06/2008 18:25

no my days of sanding and varnishing are over

i am lookinf for a lazy option

the next question is does it have to be floor paint or can it be just satinwood and wood you seal it?

You will still need to sand and then clean with white spirits before you paint, the paint will chip off over a few months - stairs are a heavy usage area and so you will be left with a chipped floor that needs repainting.

Sorry this is something I can see happening. If you varnish it will still chip but it will not show as much due to the non colour in the first place (unless using dark varnish) Which can look good distressed.

It is your choice, but i think you may regret it in a few months or even weeks time.

zippitippitoes · 10/06/2008 18:34

my brain tells me that but i am not listening apparently and i meant would of course not wood
