If I want a rear extension designing, who do I contact?

I know I’ll need a builder, obviously, and maybe an architect for the drawings, but I don’t want just a box stuck on the end of my house, and then I’m abandoned. I want someone to come and say “this would look great here” or “this layout will be better because of xyz”. I do not have the eye for design.

Would this an interior designer perhaps? Or maybe the kitchen company?

Architects will help with the layout of the interior space to ensure that your extension gives you rhe space and the layout that you want. We’re currently doing an extension and going through this process at the moment.

I was expecting this thread to be about BBLs!

Currently doing this now- had various people round and some people were much more helpful than others. I think you do need to have a vague idea of what you want otherwise the number of options get out of control.

Interior designer - find a local person not one of the really big trendy ones. They can do layouts / floor plans, lighting plans, colour schemes, furniture sourcing. Speak to a few on the phone and find one you like and find out their fee structure. Most will come and meet you at no cost and find out exactly what you want and then give you a fee proposal. It may cost you a few thousand but their input will save you from costly mistakes and they can hold your hand thru the whole process. You'll also get a cohesive design without looking too 'done' and save your sanity from decision fatigue!

Look up the company resi. It’s what they do

A decent builder will talk you through the best way to use the space and get an architect to draw up plans. They will
also have a good idea of what you will need / get planning for, which is worth taking into account when deciding what you're doing. I found looking at lots of pics online helped me too. For the kitchen in our extension, I used the John Lewis service, which was about £50 (a few years ago) for them to come out and design it, which helped me think through the layout. (I got the kitchen elsewhere.)

I am now planning a bathroom and found a mumsnet thread on things you should know before doing your bathroom (can’t remember the exact title), which had some really good do’s and don’ts, so maybe worth looking for / starting one of those?

Architect.

MrsPositivity1 · 15/12/2025 15:56

I’d say an architect
