We’re finally moving into our new house this week !!

It’s been a long time coming, offered in March, had a nightmare with the solicitors and the house not being registered, one of the vendors almost dying before exchange, anything that could of happened, did. We’ve been stuck in a small mouldy flat overcrowded and stressed to the max. But we got the keys on Halloween and have had it rewired, replastered and a new boiler fitted. Finally it’s almost time to move in, so why do I feel anxious ?!
It’s going to be tight with Christmas next week, no wrapping yet done, getting the tree and decorations up, getting everything sorted house move wise, settling the kids into their new home, I feel stressed out and want to enjoy the process.
Any advice on what we can do to make this easier on ourselves ?!

My parents moved years ago 2 days before Christmas.
The removal men transported the fully decorated tree from old house to new!

With a tree you can wrap it in cling film and transport fully trimmed up .
Congratulations on your new home .

Congratulations! We moved nearly a month ago and I haven’t stopped for breath since, so I’m going to take my own advice and just say SLOW DOWN. Cut yourself a lot of slack when it comes to making sure everyone is fed - our new kitchen wasn’t very clean and is still a bit of a project and this stressed me no end but I’m now very well acquainted with the nearest pizza delivery place and have stopped giving as much of a shit.

How old are your kids? If Christmas is still a big thing to them, focus on that because you only get so many of them while they’re little. Get it as Christmassy as you like it. Unpacking anything other than the essentials for everyday life can wait a bit. You’re not going anywhere 😁

Hope it all goes smoothly for you and you have a lovely Christmas in your new home!

Unpack your main rooms (kitchen especially), don't bother wrapping presents, get gift bags and tissue paper instead. Take your tree fully decorated and pop it down as soon as you are in. Congratulations on your lovely new home!

Congratulations and hope you will be happy in your new home.
We downsized this year and bought some big garden waste bags from Amazon to pack/ move bedding towels coats etc. You could have Christmas bedding throws etc ready to go in these.
The cardboard wardrobes from the removal co were very handy on the day.
Don’t put too much pressure on yourself re food this Christmas. If you can still get some quality frozen party foods or ready meals for over the Christmas period do that. You could start some new traditions this year.

Being together in your new home is what matters. Everything doesn’t have to be perfect and done straight away, take your time and be kind to yourself.

We had a similar situation.

Kids had a tabletop Christmas tree each in their rooms which we brought downstairs on Christmas Eve.

Had pillowcases instead of stockings ‘just like the old days!’ As we had no idea where the stockings were.

It was bare floorboards and bits of carpet and bare plaster but we were in. Chucked a few Christmas jumpers and headbands around and it was great. Didn’t even unpack the big tree and decs that year.

Didn’t feel one bit guilty as moving house was what we had really needed as a family and that trumped anything Christmas-wise.

Fortunately went to relatives for Christmas dinner that year.

Another year we were visiting family overseas. Had a mini Christmas Day at the end of January when we were back and sorted!

Honestly it’s the love and company that matters most. Have fun and go with the chaos!

Congratulations! I always find it takes a while to settle into a new house, even one you love. So don’t be surprised to feel a bit unsettled for a while. Definitely don’t put yourself under any “hosting” pressure and try and enjoy Christmas. It’ll all come together eventually and feel like home.

Oh thanks all! I am probably putting too much pressure on myself, my toddlers are only little and this year they understand abit more so I feel like I have to still go for it Christmas wise, the tree is in our storage container somewhere ! Worrying by the time I get chance to do the xmas shop they’ll be no turkeys left…

Also yes a little bit of me is nervous to be in a new, different house, even though this house is all I’ve thought about for the last 9 months !

we needed to buy sofas at that point
