How do I get a normal doorbell?

I detest charging my smart doorbell. I detest that this is a modern chore that I have to do. I want a doorbell that just works 100% of the time. I’ve tried two different brands and none of them stay charged even after having the electrician check the connection.

Trouble is the previous owners also had a smart doorbell so there’s no longer any mechanical chime or similar connected.

What type of doorbell can I buy that I can install myself? I just want one that doesn’t ever run out of battery. The wires to the outside have power but it appears to be too low to keep smart doorbells charged. I also don’t want to spend another £200 on an electrician.

I have a lovely door knocker. No bell.

Tecknet self powered doorbell, about 20 quid on Amazon. Stick the push button on your door/wall either by adhesive pad or screws (both included) and plug in the ringer in your hall. Dozens of ringtones to choose from, adjustable volume and with the plug through design you can plug other devices or appliances into it. Absolutely brilliant and no batteries ever needed. You're welcome 😊

A wireless one will sometimes go wrong.

You can have a simple wired one if you want.

You can drill a hole through the doorframe for the wire (sloping outwards).
If you already have some wires you might be able to use them if you can work out what they do.

My house had (has) a wired entryphone but I fitted a simple sounder instead because it is louder and you can hear it through the house.

This is an example of a wired ding-dong.

My mum has a doorbell where the chime comes out of a box that has batteries in. She has a lot of visitors but she’s never had to change the battery until this month after about a decade.

It’s like this one. But a decade older.

You could get one of those ones that’s an actual bell. Like in downton.

And I found this one which takes 4 torch batteries and doesn't even need a transformer supply.

I fitted something similar for an elderly relative and the batteries lasted at least five years. I changed them just in case when I remembered.

There are several similar Honeywell ones, which are a reputable brand.

There is practically nothing in them to go wrong.

Love the idea of a proper bell! Do that OP

Zanatdy · 13/12/2025 06:16

My ring doorbell doesn’t need charging much at all. I know that’s not the question but maybe as not many people visit! Haha. I love having a ring though, but pretty sure lots of people still have a regular doorbell. Youtube is your friend.

ACynicalDad · 13/12/2025 06:18

Or buy a solar pack to charge a ring if you already have it.

BringBackCatsEyes · 13/12/2025 06:46

I’ve got the Telnet one. Perfect. Stuck the bell on the door frame (have had to change the battery once in about 5 years), one ringer in the house and the other in the garden office.
I am the least household techy person around and it was so easy to set up.

TickingKey46 · 13/12/2025 06:52

Just get the one you already have hard wired into your electrical box.thsts what ive got, cost me £70. Never need to worry about charging it.

We have something very similar. Another advantage is that you can have more than one chime. We have chimes upstairs, downstairs and in the garage. No more missed doorbells.

Poorly3yrold · 13/12/2025 07:50

We got ours in Wicks. Sticks on outside and has a plug in bell in doors. About £15.

purpletrees16 · 13/12/2025 17:25

I chose the tecknet thing - though the idea of an actual bell was very tempting but the house is 1930s (and we have an 1980s porch in front) so it would look out of place!

Thanks all!

Get an actual bell.

We have a Ring doorbell but don’t use the video. Batteries last for ages.
