We are doing some work on our home and I was thinking about things I would never change about it, apart from the obvious (period features, etc). My absolute #1 would be the laundry chute from the main family bathroom to the laundry room in the basement. I LOVE that so much. It just occurred to me that you all have equally cool, quirky stuff and I want to know about it while I have the builders in doing all the work!

We just did an extension and new kitchen. I know this is so sad but I love my built in bin. It's got four sections - one for rubbish, one for recycle, smaller one for compost and another small one for cans. I don't have to look at an ugly bin or walk rubbish to a bin.

I also love my pantry. It's 4 metres wide although fairly shallow. But have a run of shelves and keep all the stuff like baking tins, slow cooker, microwave etc. All the clunky and ugly stuff. Plus bookshelves for all my cookbooks. And it has a sensor light which still makes me happy!

Utility room
Walk in wardrobe
Massive bathroom big enough to have a free standing bathtub, bidet and his and hers sinks.
Pantry
Porch
Separate reading room
Dining room with bifold doors leading to garden area with designated barbecue area and seating.
Lots of feature widows to allow natural light:
Mezzanine area with huge windows overlooking the garden.
Kitchen with skylights and bi-folding doors.
Double garage.

A Sheila maid - essential an airer hanging from the ceiling in the utility room. Washing is out of the way and dries over night. I hated having to find places for an airer!

Quooker tap, love it!

built in bin in kitchen, sounds standard but only got it recently with a new kitchen it’s great to have recycling and all hidden in a pull out bin!

itsthetea · 19/12/2025 10:54

a good husband ?

TamarindCottage · 19/12/2025 10:56

A husband

Astra53 · 19/12/2025 11:00

A very, small utility room with fridge freezer, washing machine and tumble dryer. It saves having dirty washing piled up in the kitchen.

Misscoffee · 19/12/2025 11:01

Best thing that's not in my home and makes life wonderful is, no kids, no man.

I love my waste disposal unit in my sink . Peelings , plate scrapings straight in . Also pop up socket on island .

Laiste · 19/12/2025 11:11

Massive hall.

Nice to have room for a xmas tree and lovely big rug and and just nice to a large area as you come in which looks posh.

but more importantly loads of room for all the coats and shoes and boots going east and west and shopping bags and school bags and god knows what else when everyone comes in and sheds everything they possess in there!

We got this house our forever house just under a year ago.
It is a new house and we have been adapting it as we go along.

  1. we have the most awesome sunsets across farm land but the garden slopes we took our time and investigated and then employed a local company to sort out the top part of the garden. Beautiful decking and it is perfect
  2. We have a ‘departure lounge’ it’s a huge enormous cupboard in the hall way, it has over 30 coat pegs and enough room for 18 shelves and boxes for shoes, boots, binoculars, hi vis jackets, dog stuff and Horseriding kit etc everything is labelled and spa space for everything. Sunglasses, hats, sun cream and then hand warmers - it was my dream and my husband made it happen.
  3. bathroom on each floor again it’s excellent!
  4. dog beds (we have 3 dogs) on each floor
  5. a kitchen with a huge sofa and a dining table - love the the kids can do homework on it and then flop on the sofa

we Have still got the following to do:
garage conversion into a den and teenage area we have waterproofed outside but got heating and doors to put in next year
robot mower
hot water tap

Maraudingmarauders · 19/12/2025 11:29

Downstairs shower for the dog, in our old house it was a hose outside or bucket in the kitchen job and I hated it. Having a shower cubicle just off the utility is a dream.

olderbutwiser · 19/12/2025 11:31

Dammit, rushed on here to say Husband and Quooker, but loads of you got here before me.

Wet underfloor heating.

IsThisLifeNow · 19/12/2025 11:38

Love my robot hoover, got young kids and its so nice to set it off and not have to sweep up after every meal. Its a self washing mopping one too and its great. I don't think it does as good a job as getting a bucket of hot soapy water and doing it the old fashioned way, but I never really do that, so getting it done twice a week this way is much better that it getting done properly only a few times a year.

I had a walk in pantry in my old house and miss it a lot. Ditto the heated floor in the bathroom, although I think the cats miss it more!

Jk987 · 19/12/2025 11:39

Utility room and a 2nd bathroom. Makes a massive difference and I feel very fortunate.

DinoLil · 19/12/2025 11:48

Alexa! Everything is voice activated and automated. Just brilliant.

Crushed23 · 19/12/2025 11:51

Doorman:
Makes me feel safe, collects my parcels for me, greets me when I leave/arrive.

Super:
Takes the rubbish out (I just have to leave it in stairway), fixes everything.

Dolorsy · 19/12/2025 12:06

Things I love in my house, which is not at all big or grand like the ones described above

boiling water tap
little laundry with washer, dryer, sink, and ceiling airer above -- I would love a laundry chute into this actually
sit bath
solid old wooden shutters
old stone walls and wooden wainscot
wood burners
all drawers in the kitchen, even fridge and dishwasher, and bins!
robot hoover
wet underfloor heating - it's so cosy in winter and cool in summer
heated veranda so I can get "outside" in the endless rain

RosesAndHellebores · 19/12/2025 12:13

Hot water tap
boot room
electric gates and gge door

PuppyMonkey · 19/12/2025 12:19

My own bedroom. As in, DP and I sleep in separate rooms. Amazing.

Bohemond23 · 19/12/2025 12:37

Things I love in my house. None of these are unique but they either happily came with the house (which is sixteenth century in places) or we have added over 10 years:
Downstairs office/yoga room. Decorated by me and including a cocktail cabinet (both functional and decorative)
Very large landing with dehumidifier for washing (will look into a Sheila maid when we decorate
My own bedroom
Massive chest freezer in the garage
Big chest of drawers in a living room nook. Currently filled with Xmas presents but has one drawer dedicated to all year round wrapping paper, recycled gift bags, sellotape etc
Gym in the garage with all the stuff
Boot room with shower and toilet by back door (good for dog and tradesmen Grin)
Large walk in recess in the kitchen (was pantry but no use as all of the heating pipes go through it). Now has deep shelves to hold all of my kitchen equipment so have clear counters
Big greenhouse
I like the idea of a departure lounge but I am not sure where I could put it!

weareallcats · 19/12/2025 12:57

Quooker tap (boiling, filtered and sparkling water).

Also a worktop pantry with bifold doors, so I have the worktop space when cooking and then can just shut the doors - has plugs so heavy kitchen gadgets just live in there.

Agree with bins in a cupboard too.

Dehumidifier - boring but is amazing (shocking how quickly it fills up too). I also use it for drying washing and it is really quick - much quicker than any other method I’ve used (other than tumble drier).

Crikeyalmighty · 19/12/2025 13:20

I miss my massive basement laundry/storage room I had at our house in Copenhagen - washer, dryer, racked shelves, hung up washing lines , a big storage area for cases/xmas tree etc , it was about 20ft by 16 ft and fab
