60k where/what to buy?

Milloew · 29/11/2025 23:21

Because of divorce, exh and i are selling our London home. I live in the EU now with the dc, but would like to keep a base in the UK. Dc consider uk home, and would possibly like to return there in 5/8 years..
Ive been looking on zoopla, but obviously cant afford anything in the SE, which is all i know.
So, where/what would you buy if you had approx 60k cash? Something rentable with good transport links. Not too dodgy or remote. Interesting enough for a young adult?

£60k?? Did I read that right? My mum used to live in rural Lincolnshire and even her tiny house cost £80k about 10 years ago…..

thishouseisashittip · 29/11/2025 23:25

Not much! Couldn't even buy a flat on the dodgy estate in my town with that. And we have eff all here! When I say that I mean it too (well a McDonald's and a Costa but that's literally it!

FunnysInLaJardin · 29/11/2025 23:27

that can't be right. Although 30 years ago we bought a house for £35k so you could time travel?

ProfessorDrPrunesqualer · 29/11/2025 23:27

Put a city into rightmove for the good transport links and young person vibes with a max of £60k

I put Liverpool in and got this one bed flat

60K?? Not alot. Not even in my town in the NW.

Milloew · 29/11/2025 23:29

I've seen 1 bed flats in Leeds for example for about that price. I should have been clearer. Not looking for a family home. 1 bed would be fine.

there’s lots more.

haven’t checked transport for this one and not as great as the Liverpool one on location

60 cash??

Good luck with getting anything in the EU on that.

I think you're living in a fantasy,

Liverpool an awesome city.

About a month ago someone asked the same question & my initial thought was 'no bloody chance' but she got loads of positive replies.

Try & find the thread. Maybe ask MN if they can help?! But don't give up on the idea as there were loads of very good options.

if I get a chance tomorrow I'll try to find the thread.

There seem to be semi derelict properties in the outskirts of Grimsby for £60k.

That’s the starting price in an auction sale

I think you're living in a fantasy,

I'm looking for a small rentable place in the UK in case dc want to return 'home' when they're young adults. 60k is not fantasy. Liverpool looks good. Luton seems affordable too and should be rentable enough. Close to London, but maybe dodgy though? A family members dc studies in Leeds and seems to like it, and 60k could buy a studio there. Just difficult when you don't know what the areas are like.. Auctions could be a possibility too since i will be a cash buyer.

The vast majority of links were to properties that were shared ownership, auction (so starting price) or retirement/ O55s or whatever. Or flats with very short leases and high service charges.

Pointless.

This is a fun map OP
If you can’t see the City name under all those £50/60k price tags it’s Manchester

I've been filtering shared ownerships and retirement properties out of my search. Its true many flats have short leases. But auctions could be worth a try. And there are several priced under 60k bidding price.

If you wonder about Leeds, maybe take a look towards Bradford. 15 mins on the train to Leeds and you could very possibly buy a flat in the City Centre, very close by the station for 60k- that would probably be as nice or nicer than anything you can get for 60k in Leeds. It’s a city that gets a bad rep, but does have a lot going for it.

Is Rightmove a better site to look on? I've always just used zoopla

Maybe also look over the Mersey from Liverpool to the Wirral peninsula, bus direct to Liverpool and good train service ( I grew up there). Lots under 60 but lots auction too, but some nice one bedders. Would also look at more modern build if you will be living in EU and away so won’t want too much maintenance hassle, just a thought!

Auction. It could go for twice that price.

On an auction property you are required to pay a non refundable deposit pending Exchange. So all due diligence (survey, searches, look at lease contract etc ) has to have been done before you place your bid. Unless you risk doing without these step and find you have paid a non refundable deposit on a place beset with dry rot or awkward covenants.

And you have no idea whether you will win the auction so could pay for many surveys before you got somewhere.
