What puts you off in a kitchen?

Just this really. Is there anything you particularly dislike or wouldn’t choose again? Thank you!

I hate electric cookers. My parents had a gas all their life and switched to electric for ‘easy cleaning’ (which I get now they’re older) but I just can’t stand them. They don’t look pretty or classic

Me too. It takes so long even to heat up some soup! Everytime I'm at my mums I hate using her hob. I love my 5 ring gas hob.

Ok, so space for sofa and decent sized table. Both reasonable requests. But if you’ve still got a big space left? Would you just leave it empty?

It's hard to say without seeing the space or a plan, but I'd prefer almost anything over an island. If there is lots of space, then a low table and some armchairs instead for more living space.

Giggorata · 29/11/2025 23:37

I dislike islands, bar stools and insufficient electrical sockets.
I don't like gloss units, white or grey anything, subway tiles, marble, quartz, granite or whatever stone worktops.
I don't want a gas cooker.
If the kitchen hasn't got a pantry, a floor to ceiling cupboard or an extractor fan, forget it.

MonGrainDeSel · 29/11/2025 23:49

I definitely want a gas cooker. And I don't mind subway tiles.

I guess these threads always show you can't please everyone!

It depends on the size of the kitchen. The priority is space maximisation. Personally I dislike cluttered worktops, but it sometimes can't be helped in very small kitchens.

Yeah, I hate it too, but unfortunately my kitchen is very small & I am very short (not quite 5ft, & a replaced shoulder so can't really lift any weight or up very much) so I do end up with stuff on the worktop. It wasn't soo bad until I got the coffee machine & the airfryer (both have to live on one worktop & utensils & other stuff on the other worktop. It's all organised & tidy but still drives me bonkers, but there really isn't any other option!

I should be moving soon in a property with the same layout (sink on a wall, hob opposite wall). I’m dreading the thought of it.

I saw on on Rightmove the other day. A big room, kitchen split in two with saga seating in the middle. So sink one end. Oven/hobbs the other end. Sofa/tv in the middle.

nuts.

AutumnLeavesFallingFast · 30/11/2025 00:23

@Gingka

hopefully this will all help you get what YOU want. Don't choose things to make it more saleable in the future because, as you can see, as many people LOVE something as HATE IT! 🤣🤣

Nushi21 · 30/11/2025 00:39

The cooking part puts me off.

My family all Know that if I won the lottery, I could get myself a chef!

captainoctopus · 30/11/2025 00:50

We had our kitchen remodelled years back and I got outvoted by the kitchen designer and DH (whose cooking talent stretches to a decent cup of tea) about having an island.
So I had one made my way - it's got a small sink in it right near the stove for draining veg, filling the kettle etc. (otherwise you have to dodge around the island to get to the big sink). It's all cupboards and drawers - it's attached to a wall by a table height surface with no cupboards beneath at which 4 can sit on ordinary chairs. It has several power points in various places.
I admit it works pretty well - fortunately it's a fairly large room (but I still preferred the space without it) 🙂

ByQuaintAzureWasp · 30/11/2025 01:00

Gas hob, no dishwasher (the worst), washing machine in kitchen.

But what if you have space for table, island and sofas? It makes for a really well balanced kitchen, the cook of the house doesn’t always have to have their back to their family or guests if there is an island.

billysboy · 30/11/2025 08:23

lots of hate for islands here I am mid way through a kitchen refit
we have an island , 4 foot gap around it on three sides on the fourth side is exposed to an inglnook fireplace with two chairs in front of it , separate utility with white goods sink etc
I have just ordered quartz worktops and have a breakfast larder to build on top of it once installed ,currently have temporary ply
no quooker tap
Gas hob , built in combi microwave, oven and warming drawer same as bake off

lots of differing opinions on here which is great as this is what makes the world go round

HostaCentral · 30/11/2025 08:40

I don't like anything integrated. I like freestanding everything. Love my range cooker, double gas hob, double electric oven.

Sinks have to be under windows and double.

Qooker taps are rank, tea tastes vile.

We have a long kitchen, but sufficient room down the middle. Kitchen table in the L at the end.

I don't like unenclosed shelving instead of wall cupboards. Dust and grim.

Biggest bugbear in mine, shaker units with all the insets which collect dirt. Never again.

Ilovemyshed · 30/11/2025 08:49

I like a giant island slab of granite or quartz. Great for prep and pastry making. Stools one side for sitting while one person cooks.

Range cooker with one big oven.
Full height fridge.
Shaker units rather than plain slab.
Wood worktops for warmth.

FuzzyPuffling · 30/11/2025 09:08

I don't like cooking. My worst nightmare is having people watch me and " be social" while I cook.
If I've asked you round for a meal, it will all be prepared in advance, andcreadybto served to you.
Even DH knows better than to watch me while I'm cooking.

So, bar stools and their ilk, no thank you.

Aaaaaaaaawwwwwww · 30/11/2025 09:20

I have just had a new kitchen, and had to move an internal door that meant the rest of the kitchen was split from the fridge freezer. Pure madness.

Had island to keep it easier to have sink by hob and close to fridge, no to shaker doors that collect dust. But we decided no stools etc on island to allow for big dining table next to it which allows for social element but not stools which I can’t get on with.

Replaced most cupboards with deep drawers and got a proper larder cupboard.

Already regretting not getting a tap with the detachable spray bit to get round the sink. Plus bastard white composite sink really stains easily.

FunnyOrca · 30/11/2025 09:29

I’m happy with our kitchen, the only two things I would change:

  1. Get a sink waste disposal. We had it before and I really miss it. We traded for more space under the sink, which we don’t use.
  2. Those long drawers! I had no feeling about them before hand and they were just put in by the designer in the first meeting and I was happy enough. They are SO ANNOYING! Someone is basically always standing in front of them because they are so long!

lifeturnsonadime · 29/11/2025 16:11

Watching this thread with interest. We may move the kitchen sink away from being under a window but I am reading that this is a no no is so interesting!

We have just moved our kitchen sink from under a window to facing a wall as we needed to knock through into our conservatory. I have to say, so far I don't mind it. I loved the view out of the window, but I hated not being able to clean it very easily.

Corner cupboards, the base unit one, especially ones with the rotating shelving units. Awful, awful things. Hid dirt in the base that you can't get to, lose tons of space behind, and lose various items when they wobble off as you turn it?

Wall cupboards in a corner. Really hard to try and get things in the far corner.

Wall cupboards that go to the ceiling. The top shelf is too high to be able to reach easily without a ladder. I'd rather a top shelf I can reach, and then either a boxed in section, or just the top left open and have to clean as and when I remember.

I am hoping when we redo this kitchen in a few years, we will be able to have no wall cupboards, or only ones for glasses and more display type ones, and just have pan drawers and inner drawers to those for utensils

ResusciAnnie · 30/11/2025 10:49

Corner cupboards. Absolutely despise them. I mean the ones where you can’t reach half of the cupboard because it extends far back under the corner of a counter top. Carousels are ok but still there is always something that falls out the back of it and is lost forever. Our new kitchen has zero of these monstrosities and I am delighted! There is one in the utility but things go in there to never be seen again.

FuzzyPuffling · 30/11/2025 11:21

Those thin pull out larder units😕. Can't clean them properly, they always wobble and the eventually- squeaky rails set my teeth on edge.

This - although I don't mind cooking.

I don't like kitchen islands, washing machine/dryers in kitchens, non-integrated bins.

I have an induction hob which heats faster than my previous gas and non-induction electric ones, so that's now my preference.

Femalefootyfan · 30/11/2025 11:47

CoastalCalm · 29/11/2025 12:39

High gloss cupboards

This and we have them! They weren’t my choice but I compromised as I got other things I wanted that DH wasn’t too keen on.
There’s only the two of us in our house so they don’t get too bad so they only need shining back up every week or so but for anyone with kids constantly in and out of the cupboard they’d be a total nightmare.

DrMickhead · 30/11/2025 11:55

I love the aesthetic of wooden worktops but have had 2 lots of wooden worktops buckle around the sink so never again.
Also tiled flooring, it got chipped so easy.

SleafordSods · 30/11/2025 11:58

Didntask · 29/11/2025 12:54

I don't mind islands in general, but I hate eating at them, so if there isn't enough room for both a table and an island, the island has to go.

I much prefer drawers to cupboards.

Draining channels in worktops by the sink - just NO. They get manky. Use a draining mat instead or better still, get a double sink.

Totally agree with this. I don’t have a hatred pf all islands but much prefer a table and chairs. If you do have an island I’m with George Clarke who persuades people to made ones that you can move to the side when you’re entertaining.

mondaytosunday · 30/11/2025 12:04

Wooden, laminate or tiled countertops. Fridge doors that open the wrong way. Washing machines in the kitchen. Not enough work space to the right of the stove (where I always prep). Sinks
in the island. Base level cupboards rather than drawers. No tall cupboard to house vacuum/mop/broom. Exposed boiler. Poor task lighting.
