Anyone live in a house with zero storage?

I've just had an offer accepted on a house which is in the perfect location, has lovely gardens and 4 good sized bedrooms. I am starting to feel slightly worried though as it has no storage areas at all, apart from kitchen cupboards. Under the stairs is a cloakroom, the airing cupboard is completely full of hot water tank, and two bedrooms take the place of the attic! Can someone reassure me that I am not condemning myself to drown in my own clutter? Any suggestions on where I put the vaccuum cleaner?

We have the same problem, although have we are lucky in that we have an under-the-stairs cupboard for vacuum, so no words of advice there. For clothes etc I went to IKEA and bought a load of their nice storage boxes - cardboard for tops of wardrobes and under bed storage baskets. Other than that we have begged furniture such as wardrobes and chest of drawers from family and friends! We also have a couple of sheds which are packed to the rafters.
Before you move in you have to be utterly ruthless about getting rid of stuff as well. Good luck!

So the four good sized bedrooms will shrink a bit due to wardrobes & there's no attic. Has it a garage? Room for sheds?

Is there no space in claokroom for hoover? Are there no shelves at all above water tank for towels and sheets?

Thanks kooky, I think being ruthless is going to be the key.
There is a garage Heated, dh has warned me that he would like to get his car in it but I'm sure we'll still be able to ram some of our tat in there too. Plenty of room for sheds so that's a good thing.
Yes Pointydog, there is a shelf above the water tank..which has two other little tanks on it. I have no idea what they do but they are taking up potential towel space!

Ah well I'm sure we'll survive. I fear I will have to become one of those Organised types though.

Ruthless was gonna be my advice. I moved into a bach, little holiday house last year and have been moving loads of stuff.

We don't have a huge amount but are boarding the eaves spaces. can you create a space in a porch or hall for a cupboard for odds and ends.

I live in a three bed flat - so no garage or attic. We used to have a storage area in our building, but that is now gone. We are lucky enough to have two cupboards in our hallway, but I have to say that we have managed fine.

Part of it is being ruthless and not keeping junk. But also, wardrobes in the bedroom are the key. We have built in double ones in each bedroom that are floor to ceiling. So as well as the main wardrobe part, there are seperate smaller cupboards at the top. All our beds have got drawers underneath which are used for bedlinen and towels.

is there a untility room whener you can keep the iron, lunch boxes, mop, small children?

allgonebellyup · 08/06/2008 20:59

hey - you could have my house:

  • no understairs cupboard, stairs are part of our lounge so thats where the sofa goes,
  • no hall (front door leads straight into lounge), so nowhere to hang your coat/put shoes
  • no cloakroom
  • no airing cupboard
  • garden so tiny theres no room for a shed!
  • no garage!
  • my hoover is kept next to my computer in the dining room, and our coats have to hang off the back of the lounge door!

I think there will be room for the odd cupboard, and I'm thinking lots of shelves will be a good idea too.

There is a utility room, it's more of a utility corner but a corner is better than nothing! Always handy to have somewhere to stow a small child Northern.

I feel a lot better now, we have so many cupboards and little nooks in the current house that I just couldn't see where everything was going to go.. dh has got a bit tired of me looking at Rightmove and muttering under my breath about storage.
