Who do I need for house redesign?

I am clueless, please help me hive mind.

Moved into a new house about a year ago. It was 'done up' by the previous flipper, so it's ok but still needs some work - some things they didn't do, some bits are just a bit crap, some of it's fine.

Have the money now to fix things, but it's not big enough to be a 'proper' job - ie. not doing an extension, rebuild etc - but will mean moving a couple of internal walls around, new porch, new internal doors, redo the bathroom, turn a window into a door & vice versa. Plus a whole bunch of stripping back, plastering and building better storage in other rooms which probably need to be bespoke due to room shapes.

I really need someone to help and give me some guidance on turning my vague thoughts into an actual plan as I am absolutely crap at visualising and any kind of home decor! Right now any builder would scratch their head as they need something more solid to work to.

How can I go about looking for the right kind of professionals? I don't think I need an architect, but it seems too much for an interior designer? (Yes I am hopeless, I am generally more capable in other areas of life, but house stuff... sadly not).

thank you anyone who made it this far!

I'd have said you just need a good builder for the wall moving, new porch etc. If all you're doing structurally is turning a window into a door and moving a couple of internal walls, that doesn't require an architect or engineer (assuming they're not significant/load-bearing), and unless you need help with the decor, I wouldn't have said it was primarily an interior designer's territory either.

If it's layout you need help with as a first thing, post the current internal layout on here. People often make good suggestions for a rejig.

I'd say your real issue will be finding a builder for such a small job...?

What is your budget for professional services?

DoSomeWork · 19/11/2025 12:05

The decor comes later - I want all the structural stuff done first! Budget for everything is £150k but that includes building a home office in the garden as well. So could hire professional if only I knew who...!

Builders are in high demand so yeah, finding a good one who is willing to do piddly bits instead of a whole reno job is likely to be tricky too.

@DoSomeWork The first issue is establishing if the internal walls are load bearing. Some builders might know but others wont. As a result you do need at least an architectural technician who does this sort of work. I would always give builders drawings they need to with to or its guesswork and possibly big issues if you need a rsj.

Just get an architect, then you will have more confidence in the plan, and have that plan to show a builder.
