HGV reversing up a private driveway

I realise there are those that don't care if cars/vehicles use their driveways to turn in/reverse up and those that massively care. I'm wondering would those that tend to not care actually care if it was a massive HGV reversing the full length of the vehicle up a private driveway?

Once in a blue moon? No. Daily? Yes for potential for wear and tear on the groundwork due to the weight of the vehicle.

Buy a bollard or have posts put in?

This. I would definitely consider blocking them from doing this, bollards, gate, whatever would work in the situation.

As a one off I wouldn’t be very impressed, but would accept it as one of those things. But yes if it was regular I’d be worried about damage and would tell them to stop/keep my gates closed.

We live in a cul de sac and a lot of cars use my driveway to turn around if the turning circle is crowded, I don’t mind that at all.

TBH if an HGV can reverse into it to turn around we are not really talking about a domestic driveway as most people would envision it. Sounds more like a private road type of driveway in which case as pp said, occasionally ok but multiple times daily could end up causing damage

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 18/11/2025 17:41

Is a domestic drive heavy enough to take one of these?

I'm aware I've lost perspective, hence asking here, though my perpsective is based on the fact that I'd never use a private driveway to turn on. It's not a traditional driveway. It's an old property, cobbled, but quite obviously a drive, and it has a private sign. The worst offender prior to this was a car transporter thing - like a tow truck or one of them that carries multiple cars on it to showrooms I guess? this week it was a massive bin wagon - not even my own council one - they must have taken a wrong turn. It was their attitude more than anything - they thought it was hilarious. I didn't.

As a once off thing I can image why he thought it was hilarious if you totally overreacted to a driver getting lost and needing to reverse. Obviously constantly doing it is different but if it’s the only place to turn and reverse then it will happen unless you put something in place to stop people accessing it. I live at the end of a cul de sac and it’s very tight and a bit of a nightmare so people doing deliveries often panic once they drive down here so I see where they are coming from and I can see your side as well.

Private signs don't work - but gates do, or bollards. I sympathise with people who take a wrong turn and turn around as soon as they can as they don't know how far/long it will be until they can go back in the direction they came - particular if they are in a works vehicle which means they are on a schedule. But I also sympathise with people who live in places such as you where this happens on a regular basis. If it really bothers you, I would put some measures in place to stop this being able to happen, as I said, signs don't work.

I’ve had this (also rural) A couple of posts a cars length in and a sturdy chain that runs between with a padlock.

It's far from the only place to turn. I have sympathy with a wrong turn. None with a shitty attitude.

Get a gate with a lock. We have had to do this. Houses in our hamlet refuse to signpost where they are. Delivery drivers arrive all the time looking for other houses. People looking for the closed pub. People thinking it’s not really a dead end. I’ve had people hit my car turning round on my drive. A van got stuck trying to turn round on my lawn! I’ve had vans blocking my exit (they get stuck on a tree) and the gatepost ruined twice. Hit and bricks damaged. So the gates are now locked. I blame the other house owners who won’t sign their houses and drivers who don’t respond to “no through road”.
