Gypsy caravan in garden? Long shot, but anyone have one?

Right.

We have (hopefully) bought a house in an AONB. Limit to what we can put in garden that's permanent because of planning restrictions.

Have seen these, which I love love love.

Having spoken to the company it sounds unlikely that we would need planning permission, but will of course check with the planning authority.

Does anyone have one or know of anyone who has one? Am I mad to be considering it? Would be an overflow bedroom for summer if the house is full (quite a small converted cowshed). House at knockdown price because can move swiftly (justify justify justify).

i love them and have always dreamed of one

Disenchanted · 08/06/2008 12:22

Oooh its so cute!

Disenchanted · 08/06/2008 12:24

Have you seen the price?! Get a house extension done!

lol

pooka · 08/06/2008 12:26

It is, isn't it.

Am thinking at the moment about:

  • security. Though am assured by the makers that they shouldn't go on the open road because no brake fitted so not road legal.
  • when not in use, would it get damp. But have looked and found a suitable sized cover that people use for more conventional caravans.
  • people thinking I am a twee cath kidston devotee (but I think that maybe I really am )

I suppose I'm vaguely trying to think of reasons why I shouldn't get one (while coming up with very plausible ways to overcome concerns. I want one, I want one, I want one).

Would surely cost more to build an extension, plus, as is in an area with pretty harsh (though reasonable) planning restrictions, I don't think permission would be forthcoming.

Plus - we could move it to future other house (if we ever get one).

See - am good at talking myself into it. Have been practicing.

i would talk myself into it too.

BoyzntheShire · 08/06/2008 12:51

doesnt say how much the childs one is. i looooove the childs one.

but then, i want an old routemaster bus to put in my field, convert to my hideaway potting shed and use as a base for building an allotment there.

and an old chitty chitty bang bang style car (broken, poss body only) to live in the garden for the kids to play in/on.

pooka · 08/06/2008 16:46

Routemaster bus would be fantastic!

You could pretend to go on a summer holiday with Cliff and the gang. Or just escape and hide on the top deck.

Grrr.

Well I think they look great. Would fit perfectly into the garden, since it's pretty meadow-like (i.e. wild untamed grass. Never going to be flat and bump-free).

But am a bit concerned about maintenance and security. Don't care about looking like a ponce as will be in the privacy of my own garden.

ooh they are so cute! I don't care if anyone thinks they are naff, I think they're gorgeous (would look a tad out of place on my council estate though )

ELR · 08/06/2008 18:41

you can get a great 7ft by 7ft shed with double glazing, underfloor heating and laminate flooring for 2600 from wickes and look quite cute in green and cream. a lot bigger and cheaper

BoyzntheShire · 08/06/2008 22:44

the shed sounds good too actch. can do cottage planting round it...

pooka · 09/06/2008 08:08

Have looked at Wickes. Great value, and you're right, could be made to look lovely.

I do lIke the idea of a summerhouse/shed kitted out as overspill room, but I think that the volume would be more than 10cubic metres (can't see the 7ft one).

Have checked, and in an area of outstanding natural beauty we're only allowed up to 10 cubic metre garden building without planning permission. And I don't think we'd get it! (which is kind of fair enough really).

Oh, I don't know! Think will keep mind open and see whether we think it's needed, and work out the security and storage things if we do.....

Anyway - still haven't exchanged, so all theoretical at the moment.

I have wanted one of these ever since Five go off and have Fun in a Caravan or whatever its called

bran · 10/06/2008 16:59

I have been longing to have one of these for a while now, but it's just not practical in a 5th floor flat.

Chocolateteapot · 10/06/2008 17:13

Oh bran, I keep looking at them as well. Was considering it for DH as an office to get round planning permission that we would need for a log cabin thing.

But sadly reality got in the way as it is much cheaper to convert the back of the garage, though if we don't manage at least a window by the summer holidays he will be in the folding camper !

Pooka, I love those caravans, they are great. I wonder if find a suitable chassis and get a joiner to make you one for a lot less than the price in the link maybe ?

endymion · 11/06/2008 14:40

LOve the huts! With electrics and everything.

Am still mulling over, and TBH would not be looking at getting one before next summer anyway. BUt definite food for thought. Thanks for alternative suggestions (including carpenter possibilities).

Will think on.......
