North east facing garden

We are very interested in a house which ticks all our boxes but has a north east facing garden. We have children so want to be able to use the garden! Our current garden faces west and gets the sun from lunchtime until the children’s bedtime (in summer!) so we are outside a lot!

If the garden is improtant to us, would we regret it??

This is the compass reading and a picture of the garden (from Rightmove)

thanks!

Ours is north east and I really like it. Having more shade in the hottest part of the summer makes it more usable for us. Definitely didn't deter the kids from being outside at all.

It's very muddy from about now to mid Feb though.

@NikkiPotnick thank you!
mud doesn’t bother me- ours is muddy in winter anyway. Just as long as not a mud pit in the summer months!

Hi I have a north facing garden, it gets as much if not more use than our former south facing garden (not as hot in summer) also plants grow surprisingly well!

No, only if it's pissed down to the extent that our south facing front garden grass is a mudbath too!

Ours is north facing and I cannot say I noticed that we get any less sun that in our previous south facing one.

I think it comes down more to "Is the garden in shade" that its orientation.
Our current garden is not overlooked that much. Our previous one had buildings all around it.

Timeforabitofpeace · 13/11/2025 11:15

It’ll be fine, because you have a long garden, so no shadows from another building.

GasPanic · 13/11/2025 11:22

Depends how long it is and how tall the buildings are around it.

You can do an online shadow analysis to determine how much sun you will get at different parts of the year.

Our back garden is on the north side of the house, which means the back fence is actually south facing. The back right corner gets the sun all day until about 4pm, when we then get it on the back of the house (house is SSE/NNW orientated).
Your garden in the pic looks big enough that it will get quite a lot of sun.

We previously owned a home with a NE facing garden. It was fine because it was a very long garden. The house itself was also very bright as our side of the semi caught a lot of light.

indoorplantqueen · 13/11/2025 15:37

Ours is NE facing and gets tons of sun, but it’s long and has nothing to the left or right. I would say based on your picture that you’ll get a lot of sun too.

Both my houses since having kids have had north facing gardens! The first garden never really got the sun, the lawn was muddy in winter and full of weeds in summer. The second house has sun pretty much all through the day til about 5 in summer. The difference is what height are the buildings on the west side of you.

mondaytosunday · 13/11/2025 22:41

Mine faces north and in the summer gets sun most of the day as it moves east to west. In the winter I don’t get any direct sun, but I’m not out there much.
Kids can be outside even if not in direct sunshine surely? As long as it’s warm enough and not raining.

LovesLabradors · 13/11/2025 22:45

I've got a NE facing garden, it's never been a problem, gets the sun most of the day, the part closest to the house is shady morning & evening. I'd prefer south facing, but it's not a deal breaker at all for me.

OhDear111 · 13/11/2025 22:50

The sun is quite high in the sky from E to W and obviously highest a S. So what’s between this garden and S that would get in the way of sunlight? My garden also is north facing but gets sun for quite a bit of the day because there’s nothing in the way. Later in the day, the house shades the garden nearest to the house but that’s welcome when it’s really hot! We eat outside there ! That garden looks fine to me.

If its a long garden which your looks like then you'll be fine
