Bathroom layout confusion

Hoping to crowd source an answer to a bathroom layout question that I’ve been trying to resolve for months! We’ve booked a renovation for start of next year so need to decide soon.

We currently have a separate shower and bath, but the shower cubicle is tiny and stressful to use. I would ideally have a separate shower and bath (who wouldn’t!) but not sure if we have the space to do it without it feeling really cramped. So a shower over bath with more room for storage (currently minimal) could be better.

The room is 190cm by 160cm, plus an additional 65cm x 35cm door recess. Rubbish floor plan attached!

Would you have a separate shower and bath in this room or go shower over bath? And what layout for each? Grateful for any views!

Would the basin fit under the window ? Then you could have a seperate shower.
We actually took our bath out as I have disabilities and teenage dc never used the bath so now have a large walk in shower. What do you use (and do you have any other bathrooms in your home) because if a bath is a priority and you are able bodied a bath with a shower over may be best. However if you hardly use the bath a larger shower cubicle might be your priority.
Can you get a bathroom designer to do you a layout? We did, it was ideal as we sourced an odd sized sink to fit the gap we had.

Also a rectangular shower that came out towards the door to make it bigger.

Move your towel rail and have the basin there.

Thanks for replies!
Yes I think basin could go under the window. It’s the only bathroom and we definitely use the shower more but I do have the occasional bath and don’t want to lose the option. Including for resale, as won’t be here forever.

Having a rectangular shower extending towards the door was my original idea but not convinced we could comfortably extend it that much…

And I have actually had a bathroom designer do some rough plans of different layouts but I wasn’t sure they were they were the best options. Won’t seem to attach now but will keep trying…

I agree, move the sink to the opposite wall and the you can have a much bigger shower. Long baths are 1800mm so the shower could be 1000mm by 1000mm. Depending on where the door starts you might be able to go bigger in one direction?

Could yi build storage into the nook behind the door? Looks like a prime place for some loo roll.

Geneticsbunny · 09/11/2025 17:22

If you don't use the bath much, you could get a 1600mm one under the window and then have a walk in shower along the long wall with the loo where the towel rail is now and the sink next to it or on the wall with the door.

kuime · 09/11/2025 17:23

Hope this works? So one of the plans does have basin where towel rail is currently but I’m worried it will be a bit close to the loo? And not allow for any additional storage which would be v useful

I like the last one but do not put a freestanding bath in, you will never be able to clean under it and stuff will just collect behind it. We have one and I dread to think how many bath toys are back there.

user593 · 09/11/2025 17:33

I would do something like this. Keeps the towel rail neatly between the bath/ shower and the sink and toilet together.

How about replacing the door with a pocket door, so it will slide open and closed? Then you can utilise the space that’s currently behind it, when it’s open, for storage.

kuime · 09/11/2025 17:51

@Geneticsbunnyyes definitely not a freestanding bath there! But otherwise agree it’s probably the best layout. I just worry it might all feel a bit squished in.

I think a 900x900 shower will extend too far towards door - I haven’t shown the size very well in my drawing but a 900 would leave only about 30cm between shower tray and door frame. But 800 might be okay, with a longer side extending towards window. Thanks!

And I hadn’t considered (or heard of, really) pocket doors but now researching!

This option is terrible - you will be weaving in between the shower and sink to get to the loo, constant bruises on your hips from bumping the sink.

I would do a bath with shower over under the window, then loo and sink unit with storage. We used a curved bath in a similar space - our room was 1500 wide, we used a curved offset bath and it really opened up the space. It was years ago so colours aren't what I would choose now but I will try to dig out a pic.

Can you mock up the space in another room with some boxes and other bits if furniture to see if it feels spacious enough? I can see the point about bashing into the sink but I think if you move it towards the bath and get a slim one then it should be fine.

mumsnit1 · 09/11/2025 18:59

You need to put the bath under the window 1600 x 7/800 then 800x800 shower in bottom right, this them leaves a 1400 gap between them for loo and basin. don't forget a loo projects about6/700 so not much room fi you try and put things opposite each other. By boxing in the bath under the window you can box in the soil pipe and run it under the bath.

mumsnit1 · 09/11/2025 19:03

You need to do a scale drawing on your squared paper and then accurately draw the basin and loo etc in terms of size. Your estimate of 1000mm between the loo and basin opposite is way off

Crazymadchickenlady · 09/11/2025 19:06

Here’s a photo of our pocket door (to the kitchen not bathroom!)

The shower and bath area is tanked, and you only need about 1.4m width for a spacious feeling bath and shower area. The shower is then walk in, with a minimal flat shower screen. Make sure to put the heated towel rail at the opposite side to the shower as it makes it warm and cosy.

haveaword · 09/11/2025 19:49

Swap your door to open outwards and then extend shower towards door a little

I’d rather have something small and do it well than try make something for in a space

Have you looked at small slipper baths?

TalulahJP · 09/11/2025 20:09

I like a loo adjacent to a wash hand basin or bidet in case someone has sickness and diarrhoea. Just saying!

titchy · 09/11/2025 20:37

We have the layout in your last option with (short 1600) bath under window, loo between bath and shower and sink opposite. It doesn’t feel at cramped.

My20sportraitlady · 09/11/2025 20:46

Maybe our room was 1300 rather than 1500. Is yours this narrow?

minipie · 09/11/2025 20:52

I’d move the loo to under the window and put the basin where the loo is. Then extend the shower up to against the bath.

kuime · 09/11/2025 21:26

Thanks everyone for thoughts. Though I’m back to being confused!

It’s the weaving between stuff I’m worried about as well as having inferior versions of things just to get them to fit in. BUT having a separate shower and bath is really appealing.

Think I do need to use boxes etc to get a sense for it, just a bit challenging to do.

@mumsnit1it’s actually the bathroom designer’s plan that says 1000m between loo and sink but I think that’s a mistake and he’s added 560m instead. Does that feel a comfortable distance between the two?

On other suggestions:
Like how that door looks. And the cat too!

Don’t think we have the space to have door open the other way unfortunately.

I like that wet room area idea! I’m going to look into that. If anyone has similar, would love to hear how it’s working
