Is building a wall inside garage subject to building regulations?

Myself and my partner have just brought our first house. The garage connects to our house internally so we decided to block up the front part of the garage leaving a 1.5m space between the garage door and wall. We wanted to use this space for garden storage and use the space internally for household storage etc. We wanted to do this mainly for safety reason with direct access into the house if the garage was ever broken into but what we didn’t consider was if this would be subject to building regulations or not 🤦🏻‍♀️ Should we have obtained building regulations for this? Will we need to knock it down?

It’s a non load bearing wall.

Have you booked an egress in the event of a fire?

There’s no egress window so no. Would adding a door to the wall we’ve built still be classed as a fire exit? Kind of defeats the purpose of why we built it but obviously fire safety is the most important thing. The internal door to the house is a fire door. Think we’ll just have to knock it down as we clearly didn’t think this through.

We fully converted our integral garage into a room, took door out, built wall and put a window in. We didn't need planning permission for this however we applied regardless just to get the council letter stating planning wasnt required. Just so we could prove in the future that planning wasn't required. Why not just apply for planning permission now before taking it apart?

Planning permission no but likely subject to building regs

Planning no (unless your area is particularly restrictive about removing parking spaces)

building regs possibly - who built it? Have you tied it in properly to the adjoining walls? you will have created an internal room in the space on the other side of that wall and it won’t have natural light, ventilation or means of escape. If you just use it for storage like it’s just a massive cupboard then fine (will need smoke detector) but if you decide to convert to a utility or office or other Habitable space then building regs required

Friends did this but the garage had a side window in the room beyond. No window/door needed in the wall shown but it will need to be insulated. Building regulations need to be followed and a certificate needed as posters have said.
