New kitchen design

I am trying to write a wishlist for a new kitchen. It will be quite big so space mightn't be an issue.

If you have had a new kitchen recently-ish
what do you wish you had included but didn't?
what is the best part of it?
what did you wish you hadn't bothered with?

Plus do you have any advise?

Thank you

Dishwasher, sink and drawers near to each other. Ogee edge on worktops. Pull out bin. Cupboard with plug to house the hoover. Jazzy colour!

Thank you @tangobravo. Pull out bin/recycling drawer is on our list

I hadn't heard of 'Ogee edge'. They look lovely but are they just another crease to clean?😐

Anyone else please?

Quooker tap, pull out cupboard for hanging towel and tea towels, ice maker on the freezer. Spice display rack.

Just ordering our kitchen this week, very excited now we have found something a bit different.

I would do a search on MN as there have been quite a few threads similar threads.

No, I actually like cleaning it because it sort of collects the crumbs when I wipe the counter into my hand if that makes sense! Plus it's so beautiful 🤣

Definitely no to Ogee edge! Looks like a grime magnet.

Drawers, is my vote. Far better than cupboards as you can get right to the back of them. No pull out larders because you get crumbs/dust stuck under the pull out bits and they are hard to clean. Open shelves are grease magnets. Extra-high cupboards up to the ceiling so you don’t get grime on top. I do like “appliance garages” which is a stupid name for a roller door over a counter but the concept is actually quite handy.

Best advice i would give is look at what you need to store and build your kitchen around that - not the other way round. I was a member of DIY Kitchens Facebook group and I was always amazed at posts asking for ideas of what to store in cupboards or drawers.
Other than that, my faves in my new kitchen are hot water tap, granite worktops (not fashionable these days but I think it's classic), mixer lift, bin cupboard, larder cupboard for hot drinks, many, many drawers and two dishwashers. We also use the warming drawer a lot more than I thought we would.

Our current kitchen has 'appliance garages' but I had no idea that was their name.
Oh yes warming drawer --- is this the same as a proving drawer?

Loves

  • big corner pantry, zero corner cupboards
  • roomy island with power, microwave under island
  • all drawers under the benches. Only cupboard is under sink - wish that was a drawer too
  • cupboards to ceiling - great for storing infrequently used items and gets rid of grime on top of cupboards
  • induction cooktop
  • etched glass backsplash - no tile grout to clean, really easy to wipe over

Would have liked

  • drawers in the kickboards - constantly wish I'd put in a built in holder for the dog dishes that slid away when not in use.. You see people put brooms, dustpans etc in kickboard drawers, but could also put things like cake tins etc that don't stack well.
  • pull out bin
  • recommend a pull out pantry if you can't have a corner pantry. Have one of those for the laundry and it's amazing.

Definitely a boiling water tap, a freezer with ice dispenser, a large larder cupboard, a big cutlery drawer, a wine fridge, lots of work surfaces…..

We recently renovated a derelict property, so I'd never lived in it beforehand but had to plan from scratch. Sorry this is long!

Things I'd change:
-We have a Belfast/Butler sink which is great, but for some reason, the plug hole is woefully small! I wanted one of those baskets to collect debris which you lift out, tip in the bin and put back in. If we put the tiny basket in, its blocked within seconds, so we can't use it! I'd never considered that the plug size must have various size options and ours is only about 4cm wide, not the 8cm or larger I was expecting- so do check this!
-We have an integrated bin. Its 60cm x 60cm but even so, we still need others and its just DH and me- no kids! Our integrated one I used for paper/cardboard, tins/cans and soft plastic as it has 3 sections. I then have a separate bin for general waste, then yet another for glass! Think about your own recycling in your area. Also, our integrated bin has a 20cm gap at the top. I was told that bin bags etc could be stored here on the thin, plastic lid part. Its so flimsy though that any part of the recycling that moves the plastic lid off the runners causes it to collapse! Its a PITA. I wish the bins came up higher and didn't have the plastic cover thing.
-I'd read about plinth storage drawers for tin cans etc. You need to have flat flooring, which we do, and despite having lots of other storage, these would have been so handy for bulk buys, dog food tins etc.
-Appliance garage! I'd never heard the term before doing our kitchen, but more storage for things like slow cooker, pressure cooker, mixer etc etc would be good.

Glad we did:
-Floor to ceiling cupboards. Yes, I need a little fold out step to get up there, but I can store lesser used appliances. Also no cleaning the tops of the cupboards of dust!
-Drawers in every cupboard to save bending down and foraging at the back of dark cupboards
-A previous property had 1 light in the centre of the kitchen. When washing up, the sink was always in the shadow of my body/head because the only light was behind me. Our new kitchen, we have multiple downlights, along with ones over the sink, island, plinth and under wall cupboard lights. They are all zoned and can be dimmed so if up in the night, its very muted
-I'm glad we didn't put a sink/hob etc within the island and left it clear
-We have multiple plug sockets put on every wall. You'd be amazed how many things could be plugged in- kettle, toaster, can opener, air fryer, slow cooker, rice cooker, mixer, phone charger etc etc.
-If you have a small gap in the cupboards, there is always a use- teatowels, folded step ladder or even a narrow wine rack!

Fave things with mine:
A couple of very wide, deep drawers
A tall larder cupboard - fits absolutely loads
Integrated microwave
Spice rack
If applicable, sink rather than hob on the island (to the furthest side) - I never worry about potential hob accidents from the kids sitting at the island, and also I can swipe crumbs into the sink!
We went for curved shape on the end units and worktops, I think it looks so expensive and a bit different

I’d change:
We have a beautiful quartz worktop which I love, but I wish the draining grooves next to the sink weren’t there - pointless with dishwasher, so just an area that gets more dirty.

I wouldn’t have:
Open shelving
Glass doors
Kickerboard lighting
Because I think they all highlight cleaning issues!

I also decided against a cupboard bin as friends say they’re never big enough, and the cupboard itself easily becomes dirty. We have a larger bin in the utility.

Be sure to consider which way your cupboard doors open - i.e so you can easily transfer items to and from the dishwasher!
