Mortgage application adamant we are going to get declined!

Hi,

I'm currently losing my mind and looking for some hope!

We made stupid mistakes with money in the past. We have defaults and ccj. Ccj is due to drop off Feb 2026, defaults are over 3 years old. We are using an adverse lender. We have a mortgage in principle and have worked hard to sort out expenses out.

We have found a house and put an offer in this was earlier than originally planned so I had not had time to vet my bank accounts. I discovered I had a returned direct debit in August for £63 because the credit card company took the payment a day early. I paid it the day after it was due so one day late.

Do you think this will automatically decline us at full application?

We have declared all previous credit issues to our mortgage broker who got us the MIP. Our annual joint salary is 112k. We are borrowing a lot less than we can afford if that makes any difference.

If it does decline could we reapply after the 3 months ticks over? How does that work?

Any advice or people with similar experience and any positive stories?

thank you

Is it actually showing as a late payment on your credit report?

Nope not showing on credit report because it was technically one day late. The lender have asked for the last 3 months bank statements so it will show it on there!

@CharlotteLouise8 do you mind me asking how much they have said they will lend and what your deposit is?
Have you gone further the application now? How did you get on?

I work with mortgages OP. A payment that is one day late will not impact your application. If it was every month or it went to a default then yes but you'll be fine. They ask for the bank statements to check for any undeclared borrowing or gambling etc. A one off late payment fee will not be enough to decline an application!
