Should I put “ long stop date” in the contract and then exchange?

All questions need to go to your solicitor.

You iron-clad protect yourself with altered contract terms. If your solicitor is not on the ball with it, find a new one.

If sellers don't accept, don't exchange early.

I haven't been in this situation but I would be extremely wary here. I did ask a pp whether the completion date can be enforced but they haven't answered. That would be a question for your solicitor.
It seems to me that your seller wants you to take all the risks of this transaction, which have been caused by them choosing a new build, while they take none at all. If the developers are insisting that they exchange months before their purchase is due, they should then move into a rental a couple of weeks later so that you can complete and move in, while they wait for their purchase. That would be the fair way to do things.

Hi just to give you all update.

vendors were ready to put 30Th April as long stop date for completion to happen no matter what but wanted to exchange contracts in early July.Vendors were not willing to go rent or put in contact about insurance issues for house.

so deal ended and we parted way.Hope I have made right decision?

Sounds very reasonable. They just don't want to compromise at all do they? They will be lucky to find another buyer who is willing to agree to their terms so will probably lose their new build.

Definitely right decision, they won't find anyone sensible on their terms and you would be crazy to make yourself legally liable for a house you're not living in for 4 months!!!
