Hi everyone.

I really don't know who to ask about this in real life. Understandably I don't want to talk to any of my friends and family about this.

I'm currently In council house and I've been really lucky to come into enough money to buy my own property outright. So soon I will be moving out and into my own bought home.

No one knows about this money and I don't want anyone to know as I don't want anyone to take advantage of me. It's going to be kept quiet. I'm planning on buying the same number of bedrooms I currently have and if anyone asks I'm planning on saying I was able to do a house swap. It's only me and my young son living together so I will buy a two bedroom.

I know I'm lying. But I don't want anyone to know about my money I've come into.

My issue is if someone finds the new property I have bought on Rightmove Sold or Zoopla. Is there a way to hide it on there?

Thank you.

There's a way to not have the photos show. I'm not sure how - maybe speak with the EA handling the sale? You don't have to go into all the details. The sale price will usually be in the public domain but it can take months to show online.

I'd say you are more protecting your own wellbeing and privacy than lying. Congratulations OP, wishing you all the best in your new home!

I hope someone comes along that can help with maintaining your privacy on Rightmove/Zoopla.

Anybody can buy the land registry records and see that you own the property outright without a mortgage I'm afraid.

BashfulClam · 30/10/2025 08:49

It’s a public record but would anyone really bother to go to the hassle of looking it up. Then accuse you of lying? Too could say you came into money and spent it all in the property so have nothing left.

Unfortunately I have an extremely nosey step mother, who thinks she has rights to know my business. She has looked up my council house on Zoopla and questioned why it wasn't on there. I keep the peace to maintain a good relationship with my father.

If it comes up on Zoopla you could say that it's a private landlord who leased it to the council.
In fact you could start saying now how you're really excited to be offered the swap and are hoping that the scheme all goes ahead.

canyon2000 · 30/10/2025 09:52

If she is that nosey then she will be able to find out you own the house. It will just take time until Land Registry is updated.
I don't really know how you can avoid her finding out eventually if she is that determined. I don't think I would go down the route of making up a story about how you have come to be living there as it will become obvious it is a lie. Good luck with your move and with your nosey stepmother💐

Congratulations how exiting. Enjoy this and embrace the opportunity. Live for you and your son, not them. If you find something a different spec, area, size that’s you love then go for it for you and enjoy it.

Once you have an offer accepted you can ask for it to be taken offline, that’s quite common.
you can’t hide land registry details and Step Mother if she is as you say may look into that.

Speak to your solicitor as there may be a way to hide the details in the sold price section of RM/Zoopla for privacy reasons. I’m not sure but do no that not every sale appears on these ‘easy access’ platforms

pop back if we can help further with your purchase. How exciting for you

Don't bother lying. You'll just end up being found out by anyone nosey enough to look and then feel even worse. All the LR sales can be found on houseprices.io and probably many other places as well. It's then easy to pay a few quid to check the LR. I do this when I'm thinking of putting an offer in on a property.

When asked I'd just say that you do not wish to discuss your personal finances.

Good luck to you. Ignore the negative energies around you.

Say you are.moving to a private rental.because you want x, y, z. Whatever your new house has that this one doesnt.

Then hope she doesnt look up the names on Land Registry as shell have to pay a few quid for that. She will see the price of the sale but that could be a landlord buying it.

no you cannot suppress public data (ownership) on the Land Registry.

You are not a vulnerable person able to claim to your info hidden.
