For a middle-aged retired couple with no children who would mostly be travelling over the winter

This one is so charming but old fashioned and while we could live with the kitchen and bathroom for a while they would need replacing pretty soon

Totally renovated but not cosy and mid-terraced rather than end of terrace

My heart says the first one but my head the second.

Check out this 2 bedroom cottage for sale on Rightmove

I couldn’t live in a house with the bedrooms upstairs and bathroom downstairs. And I’m not fond of number 2 either.

ilovepixie · 26/10/2025 11:29

And the 1st one looks to be opposite a school. Maybe lots of traffic and noise.

Zempy · 26/10/2025 11:32

The first is far superior to my eye

Cantseetreesforthewood · 26/10/2025 11:42

Neither is right to retire too.

First one isn't great to lock up and leave over the winter.

Thanks all, some very good points I hadn't thought of. We did have a house previously with only a downstairs loo and for some reason I didn't really mind that ..but it's true we're not getting any younger.

We do need to be on Arran for various reasons but yes the ferry situation is a worry for sure.

I can't picture myself in a grey soulless place so I think 2 is a no go really

definitely not no 1 because it will be a cold money sink and the downstairs loo is a problem.

I think 2 could be painted / redecorated to get rid of the grey and have a bit more character without too much expense. or keep looking.

I really like no 2.
Benefit of holiday neighbours is that if you don't get along, they will be gone very soon!

Neither tbh, keep looking.
I know it’s not something anyone wants to think about but at your age you should future proof, toilet on each floor is essential and a bungalow is preferable. Maybe consider property one if putting in an en suite upstairs is an option.
The second one is more practical but it’s mid terrace and if you have holiday cottages either side it could be a complete nightmare with noise. Also the steps to the garden would put me off.

Totally agree. Neither suitable in old age, grim thought I know but you have to consider it.

The first is poky with lethal stairs and down stairs bathroom.

The second is a holiday home and holiday makers either side of you will be a nightmare.

The first one is lovely, but the second one will be warmer, drier and cheaper to run. It will look a lot cosier when it’s full of your stuff and is lived in as a home.
