Looks OK to me. But depends on when your house was built. You may want to have a look at local reclamation yards to find a genuine one.

Sorry I may have misunderstood your post - are you asking if this fireplace is suitable for your house or is it not an original fireplace? Still depends on when your house was built & my advice to ask local reclamation yards for advice stands.

It’s in our 1930’s house, just wondered if it’s an original.

The black fire looks original, the wood surround looks like a modern redo. Just a guess though x

It looks lovely. Very arts and crafts ish

Whether it’s real or not I couldn’t say. I’d keep it.

Belindabelle · 17/10/2025 23:02

The black fireplace is original. The white wooden surround may not be, however it does look in keeping with the fireplace in terms of style and proportion. If it was my house I would happily keep both.

Thanks, looking at documents I think the house was built in 1927.

I would strip it of all the paint. If you get lucky, you will have a surround and mantle of the most gorgeous wood under there. Australia exported millions of tonnes of 500 year old trees to the UK for road building, furniture and all sorts (remember the Grand Designs episode of the lifeboat station?)

Looks original to me - try scraping some of the paint on the wooden surround to see what the wood's like underneath. The cast iron is missing a grate, etc.

Geneticsbunny · 18/10/2025 08:50

I agree with pps it look original to me. The wooden surround should be a lovely dark wood.

NancyBellaDonna · 18/10/2025 22:04

The wooden mantlepiece is likely to be Art Deco. The black fireplace and hearth slab are a bit out of keeping with that period - they look earlier (possibly Edwardian). My guess is there was originally a different grate which could have had a brick or tile surround and it has been changed. A good way of trying to ascertain if it's original is to ask the neighbours what the fireplaces are like in their houses.

Looks similar to ours, which is in a 1934 and definitely original. Poor photo but shows the colour. I think ours looks quite plain but its very solid and doesn't have dust traps.
