Window seat in a bathroom?

Would a window seat in a bathroom be odd?

We have a main family bathroom, and a large-ish ensuite.

The ensuite is only used by me and my DP although he often uses the main bath instead. We have a dormer window in there and I'm stumped for how to make use of the space.

I did have a dressing table built in but we removed it during decorating and never put it back.

I'm considering building in a window seat with a storage drawer underneath to make use of the space and so it looks more luxurious and a bit of a retreat but not sure if it will look odd?

I don't like any soft furnishings in bathrooms. I do think it would look odd - can you picture yourself sat there?

Alfabettysphegetti · 15/10/2025 22:35

@Wherethewildthings maybe very rarely to do my makeup but honestly I think it will just be a clothes horse 😂

I mainly want it to look nice, even if not used. It's such a dead space at the moment it feels wasted

I have bay-window-neverending-mold nightmares so I probably wouldn't put a wooden seat in a bay window in a room that will get steamy. It looks very nice but after my endless battle with bay window mold, I would want it to get as much air circulation as possible!

MrsKateColumbo · 15/10/2025 22:39

Ah sorry just saw it's a dormer, not a bay,
Hmm maybe in that case ....

I would put the dressing table back. Best place for a mirror is in front of a window so that your face is lit up by the light from the window to put make up on.

How about a tiled plant shelf full of exotic plants. Could be a kind of trough on a cupboard for towel storage

if there is no other seat in the bathroom, then a seat is definitely useful. even if it is just to hold a pile of clothes or to sit and cut your toenails, it is still useful.

I'd go for it.

JDM625 · 15/10/2025 22:52

If you put a seat there, would you really go and sit there? If so, to do what? Read a book, listen to music, bird watch? 🤔

I think it would look odd and personally, I'd want the room as airy and clear of soft furnishing as possible. IF you need more storage, I'd add more shelves or have open shelves for rolled up towels. Or a freestanding shelf system you could remove.

I too was going to suggest a large palm or other indoor plants.

I love a seating area in a bathroom if there's space for one.

Our last house had a family bathroom that was originally a bedroom (property built as a mill and converted to a house before indoor bathrooms were a thing), so it was a good size at 12'8 x 9'4 (3.85m x 2.85m). It had a low window with deep sill and a view over our rural garden, so I made a window seat cushion for the sill. OH liked to sit there and chat with me over a glass of wine whilst I was in the bath. We didn't experience any issues with mould on the fabric.

I've added some mock ups to show how awkward the space is.

We have open shelves currently, which were a lovely idea but I hate seeing them untidy so we have restored an old oak 3 drawer dresser for storage, and I have a large ornate full length leaning mirror to give you an idea of the style we're (I'm - DP couldn't care less) going for

We have a bamboo chair in the bathroom for when husband wants to chat whilst im in bath.
In the bay window its tiled with plants.
I would put the dresser back, hang a couple of nice plants and find a more water resistant chair if you want one. Or put hooks up for clothes.
A window seat is lovely, but a bit odd in the bathroom, in my opinion.

PigletJohn · 16/10/2025 15:59

To me it looks odd.

Surely it will get damp and mouldy if you sit there to cut your toenails when you get out of the bath?

A chair is useful in a bathroom. You can sit down to brush your teeth and wash when you have a broken leg or something,

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 16/10/2025 16:30

Personally I find having somewhere to park a small child wrapped up in a towel is very handy if you have small ones. There are lots of occasions where it's great to have a low chair in a bathroom where you won't be soaking wet like putting on toe nail varnish
BUT
It's right under the window so more high risk from a security perspective and while you can lock it up, there will be times of year you will want it open.

So I'm team dressing table with a mirror that can light up so you can also use it at night without moving all your stuff around.

If you've already got a dressing table, then the chest of drawers is a great idea. So much need for storage in a growing family. My DD is 12 and appears to have half of bloody Boots in the floor of the shower.

SeaAndStars · 16/10/2025 17:30

Window seats always look lovely but in reality are rarely comfortable. There's often a window sill to dig into your back, a draught and the actual seat is rarely high/deep/wide enough.

Not very glam, but could you get a boxed in/integral type washing machine in there? Fill it up exactly where you have used towels and dirty laundry.
