Moving to Liverpool

DH and I are relocating to Liverpool for work. We like city living so keen to be somewhere quite urban but wondering where are the popular places to live?

also 2 primary aged children so schools are important. Budget is around £600k

Not sure how urban you need but I really like Calderstones and Woolton.

MrsKeats · 10/10/2025 21:03

If you want right in town look at the Georgian Quarter.

Doseofreality · 10/10/2025 21:06

Crosby.

£600k would get you something like this :-

Mossley Hill, lots of good schools. Your budget means you can get whatever you want 😂 try to stay in catchment for calderstones school for secondary. One stop on the train to town or multiple easy bus connections,. thriving high street, lots of independent bars/restaurants/cafes etc, tons of kids activities

I’m moving to Liverpool or Chester next summer. Not decided which yet, though my office is in Liverpool. I am looking at South Liverpool, Aigburth, Mossley Hill. Debating north of Liverpool, Waterloo, Crosby or Formby.

I second this. The current catchment for Calderstones is 0.9m and likely to reduce further this year. We are 0.7 away and you can’t really go wrong with any of the areas within around 1 mile of the park (Calderstones) and school (they are next to each other.

Your budget will get you a decent house (ours is a large semi) but you aren’t likely to get detached in this area for under 650k at a minimum. There is lots to do and it’s very leafy with good transport links and lots of great primary schools.

Attractive housing - but they need to be near good schools.

OP, you need to be near me. I’m very close to Calderstones. Many schools in Liverpool are faith schools so you need to (1) live near them and (2) be in good standing with that faith or, in the case of King David, any faith . If you live in the streets bordered by Queens drive, Childwall Park Avenue, Menlove Avenue you are close to Childwall All Saints (CofE), Bishop Eton (RC), King David (Jewish, but most pupils are of other faiths), and not far from non-faith primaries such as Mosspits and Rudston Road.
This area has excellent secondaries - highly selective Bluecoat; King David High School; a good comprehensive Calderstones, and is not far from quite a few CofE and RC secondaries.

Most of the housing is 1930s semis in the £400-600k bracket, with some detached, but the prices of those can be much higher. You’re looking at parts of postcodes L18 (south of Woolton Road) and L16 (north of it). We have a good range of shops and restaurants etc along Allerton Road, and there are also a few on Woolton Road especially the fabulous La cucina di Vincenzo’s. Liverpool city centre is about a 15 minute drive, 20-30 minutes on the bus.

Woolton village is lovely but not as well
positioned for a variety of schools, further away from the city. That area is L25.

I’ve lived in both and would pick Liverpool every time.

The Georgian Quarter isn't really for family living. The cost of a permit for parking outside your own house for a start!

I am leaning towards Liverpool. What part did you live in?

Woolton. It’s has a nice villagey feel but too far from the city. The area around Menlove Avenue which has been mentioned is lovely and loads of lovely properties. I am planning on moving back when we retire.
Chester is v pretty but it’s a bit overpriced now and I find it a bit provincial. Liverpool is fun with loads going on.
The nicest areas are Hoole, Handbridge, Curzon Park and Boughton Heath.

Thanks everyone. Good suggestions here. Slightly concerned about the faith school thing - this is not our vibe at all 😐

I moved from the south to the NW 25 years ago and was shocked at the higher number of faith schools in our area (not Liverpool). However, it’s always possible to find good community schools too.

Crosby would be perfect, three good state high schools and the option of two private ones as well.
