Bathroom downstairs?

Have the option of having either a toilet or toilet and shower downstairs. What would you prefer? The house has 3 bathrooms upstairs, but architect suggested to us to make the downstairs into a shower anyway since we have the space. Would like to know what the majority think, is it something you would like or be put off from? Thank you!

I’d go both unless there’s a good reason not to? Good if you’re ever incapacitated!

I don’t really understand why you’d want a shower downstairs. I guess unless you’re thinking of moving a bedroom downstairs if elderly. I like to be near my bedroom once showered so can get in my clothes quickly and warm up! Not going up and down stairs before hand to collect my clothes etc

If I had the space, I’d have one downstairs. Mostly for “what ifs” - a future dog, easy to chuck in the shower after a walk; elderly parent moving in with us with limited mobility; injury in the future where you might have to stay downstairs for a while etc.

It’d probably get minimal use but if I had the space for it, I’d get it.

We find it handy when we have a lot of people staying or if the kids have friends over and end up really wet or messy from the garden/paddling pool water fight etc.

I would go both but also with 3 other bathrooms is overkill.

One downstairs and one upstairs is always great though. We just added a down stairs shower room and its one of the most useful and used rooms in the house.

We looked at a house with 3 bathrooms and a WC (1 family bathrooms, 1 en suite and WC upstairs and 1 family bathroom downstairs) we ended up not getting it but if we had we would have ripped out the en suite shower room to create a walk in wardrobe instead because it was just completely unnecessary to have 3 big bathrooms and who can be arsed cleaning that many lol.

I would go both. If anybody is incapacitated in the future you have good options. Personally I wouldn't buy a house without a downstairs toilet. Currently buying/selling and there is always more interest in houses that have this.

4 bathrooms is insane but I would still put the shower in downstairs if I could. I’m in my late 50s and working in healthcare. I see a lot of elderly people stuck in hospital because there’s no way to wash if they’re downstairs.

I personally found having a downstairs bathroom really nice, I loved lounging in the bath and chatting to my husband in the kitchen!

I’d make it toilet only and laundry room. Unless you already have one then bung in the shower

After spending a couple of months sleeping in my dining room after breaking my leg and being unable to manage the stairs (I was using a zimmer rather than crutches). I would say get a shower room. Having strip washes at the kitchen sink is not fun.

Thank you, everyone!
