Would an island fit in a kitchen diner 28ft long by 11.4ft wide?

The long section would be say two thirds kitchen and the left hand side third would be a dining space with patio doors on the long edge out to the garden.

So I guess the kitchen bit would be 20x11.4 - would that fit an island in?

Draw it out to scale and see how it looks.

You need at least 1metre preferably 1.2m distance from your kitchen cabinets. Then the island needs to be approx 1m wide

PragmaticIsh · 05/10/2025 18:51

11.4 feet is 3.47 metres.

Across that 3.47 metres, from one wall to the other, you'd have:

the depth of the base cupboards (60cm?)
a gap (1m minimum)
the depth of the island
another gap (1m minimum)

If you're actually living in the space at the moment, I suggest you cut a piece cardboard to the size you think you want your island to be, and see if it works.

I had a 3.6m wide kitchen. I had cupboards, a 1m gap, then island which was 1m wide then nothing. Originally I thought I could have cupboards either side of the island but we literally drew it out on the floor and it was way too tight. You need 1m either side of the island. It worked fantastically well

I’m not living there and the space is currently a smaller kitchen and separated to the top of the living room so would need the wall chopping out. Just wondered if it would work/

Was going to suggest this and try and get it at height by balancing it on something at least waist height so you can get a feel for it

Why don’t you have a peninsula instead? Still get the storage and somewhere to sit at but don’t have to have space to walk both sides

At a previous house we had a similar setup to this - our kitchen was 3.8m wide at the narrower end (5.7m at the wider) x 6.73m long.

We had our island at the narrow end with cabinets on one side only. The island was approx 1.1m wide x 1.8m long. There was plenty of room each side to walk through, but I wouldn't have wanted it much narrower.

At the other end there was a fireplace with wood burner. Originally we had a long table there, but eventually swapped this for a sofa.

Imo a peninsula would have carved up the space too much.

Thanks for the suggestions.

A peninsula is an option. Aside from carving the space up are there any other downsides to this?

I am open to having cupboards one side only but think we may end up with a massive kitchen / dining space and only a small kitchen in terms of units and worktops.

I have exactly this width and am about to embark on a new kitchen - it opens out at one end (so not as restricted on width) so thinking I could put bar stools there. I would love to hear more about yours and how it works.

@hollyblueivy Walking around a peninsular is a faff! You don’t get the storage or seating area. What would matter to me is where your window is. Or windows.

Also my island is 1.2m wide and this houses cupboards on both sides. Plus a hob, oven and sink, water softener and built in bins. It’s a big island!

Your floor units will be 600 deep. An island only 1 m away with 600 deep units means doors clash. 1m is very tight for using an oven safely, so what’s the island actually for? If you are having a 400mm overhang as being suggested, is this for seating? Is this needed in a 28ft room? I’d play around with plans but 1m between units is slim. With only 3.5m to play with, any island is tight or a bit of a barrier.

hollyblueivy · 07/10/2025 20:28

I will post the floor plan where essentially we would take the wall out between the kitchen and the dining room.

OP posts:

It would be L shaped and I have only included the broad measurement for the straight kitchen section

Would an island fit in a kitchen diner 28ft long by 11.4ft wide?

Any advances on this layout as trying to decide whether it’s worth a second viewing but just not sure if the space has the potential I’d like.
