Damp near window

Just bought a house and there is damp on the wall in the living room by the top of the window. I think it's due to a gutter on the wall outside at that point.

Once that is fixed, will this just need replastering?

You can see where someone has done a repair - that smooth circle on the outside wall around the gutter box. Looks like something else might be causing on ongoing issue. Yes fixing the drip needs to be done but I would have that window properly inspected. Did your survey not pick this up ? That won't be pennies if the whole dorma window needs redoing. Looks t me like that been a problem for quite some time

The wall itself is not wet or cold so not sure if they have fixed it but then didn't sort out the wall inside, if that makes sense.

Survey only said potential damp in chimney breast, very low level.

Maybe 🤞. Fix the drip and give it some time to see before redecoration. Damp meters are cheap. Compare readings on the walls beside the window and an inner wall. Even the £20 meters will give you a reliable indication of the differences.

Are you intending to get all the wallpaper off, looks like all the surfaces have been papered? It looks like a pretty old property from the coving.

How does the picture rail feel? Any rot?
Also the skirting lower down. The windows look pvc so should be ok I’d have thought.

The first step is definitely to stop the drip/damp as a pp said, and let it dry out properly. FWIW my bro had a damp spot in exactly the same location, slow drip from the outside gutter. Their plastering did need re doing after a long drying period (it had blown at that location) but they were going for plaster only ie no wallpaper on any surfaces. Besides that the damp hadn’t caused any other issues.

No rot on skirting or anything like that and no damp smell. We are not redecorating for a while and as it's old we are expecting to have to get all wallpaper off and at least some replastering

Will get drop fixed and see how the drying goes. Good tip on damp.meter.
