Log burner with sunken tv above...heat damage

LemonLemon25 · 01/10/2025 06:46

I really would like to have log burner with a built in/sunken flat screen TV on the wall above but worried about heat damage from the flue behind and burner below.

I would love something like in the pictures attached.

How on earth is this achievable with out heat damaging the tv?

Does anyone have this set up and can advise how it's possible.

Common sense surely tells you to put the telly somewhere else

I admit I hate with a passion TVs on walls but even if I loved it, why on earth would you think that it would be ok above a heat source

We have a log burner, our telly is on the opposite side of the room (not that far due to the burner being in the corner), we wouldnt have it any closer

I've not long come back from a holiday let that had that set up - the log burner was an electric 'log burner effect' one.

TheCurious0range · 01/10/2025 07:06

I don't know about sinking it but we have a log burner and the chimney breast doesn't get warm, they have an insulated flue. Sinking it might put it too close to the flue though.
It's not a look I like tbh, the focus of a room shouldn't be a big TV.

mazedasamarchhare · 01/10/2025 07:17

You’d need to talk to the people who install wood burners. Our chimney is properly lagged so the wall doesn’t get hot. But I don’t know how it works with a TV as we don’t have one.

countrygirl99 · 01/10/2025 08:16

It's not the heat from the chimney, it's the rising heat from the stove that's likely to cause the problem. Properly installed stoves will have a lined chimney and won't heat the outside of the chimney.

dailyconniptions · 01/10/2025 08:29

Likely fake electric woodburners. I have one and it's so realistic.

We have a projector and use our wall above the log burner as the screen

The vast majority of heat from a Wood burner is to the front. A 5k stove, burning properly, would be very uncomfortable to stand directly in front of. But they don't put out a great deal of heat directly above. The mantle would deflect most of it anyway. The set up looks odd though, the fire should be the focus of the room, not the TV. I think this looks awful.

You can make your place look like an ideal 18th century cottage if you have the space but most people have to tread a line between looks and practicality.

I have a big wall mounted TV in my living room. I want something large because it's much better for sport and movies. And putting it on the wall frees up a lot of space and gets it at a height I want.

I know someone who has a wall mounted TV above a woodburner. I suspect it survives because it is a fair way above it and also he doesn't really use the woodburner that much.

That picture of the burner with the netflix screen above isn't of a log burner that is being used on a regular basis. Where are the tools. And no one using a burner on a regular basis would stack wood like that. It's more for decoration than actual use.

FrenchandSaunders · 01/10/2025 10:31

Didn't take long for the 'I have no TV' and the 'looks shite' comments OP.

I'd speak to a proper log burner installer and seek their advice. This set up isn't unusual so there must be a way round it with a realy fire.

Personally I would rather spend my evenings watching great football and movies on a fantastic tv rather than sitting on the sofa gloating about how great my living room looks.

Each to her/his own I guess.

I’m not sure about the heat but I think having it mounted this high would surely make for quite uncomfortable watchin?

I agree with this. Wood stacked like that would slowly smoulder against the sides of stove and stink the house out. Everyone's eyes would be streaming from it. (Bitter experience).

To say nothing about the thin hearthstone next to something that looks like a cream carpet. Who would put that next to a working fire.

TwilightAb · 01/10/2025 11:25

That fire in the picture looks electric to me which is why the tv would be ok to go above it. We have a gas log effect burner and the tv on the wall is fine as it doesnt get as hot as a real burner . There would be no way I would put it on the wall if it is a real log burner though and was advised this when we looked in to getting a log burner by the fitter.
Also if you do get a real log burner please do not stack logs like this next to the burner, massive fire risk.

Absolutely this. Unless you would be sitting far back? There is a calculator (somewhere) online which I found ages ago which calculates the distance you should be away from the tv so it doesn't strain eyes, neck etc.

Soupandaroll · 01/10/2025 13:44

Could you do some kind of projector arrangement onto the wall instead? (Sorry if that’s a completely stupid idea)

Peonies12 · 01/10/2025 13:58

Look at a gas or electric stove. Log burners are awful for air quality in the home and outside, even the modern ones, every time you open it, particles get into your house.

I must admit I love my gas stove. Looks like a log burner without all the faff and having to store logs. You can turn it down or off easily but it still warms up the room well and feels very cosy. Plus no problem having our tv at a decent height above it. We did think about getting a log burner but very glad we went for gas instead. Not been a huge increase on our gas bill either.

Seaside3 · 01/10/2025 23:49

We have a tv mounted above a fireplace. To be honest, I dont use the fire as its a very ugly old electric one.
But, no, we dont get neck ache watching it. And id rather have less focal points. Why have a tv in the opposite direction of the fire? Does the fire heat the back of your sofa when watching tv? Do you only have ine or the other on? What about other focal points, such as a view?
To get around it being a massive black tv on the wall, we painted the wall black. You dont really notice it when off.

JaniceBattersby · 01/10/2025 23:55

The mantle must protrude enough to deflect the heat in order to meet fire regs. An insulated flue and fire-retardent plasterboard means there won’t be (much) heat coming through the chimney breast itself.

Get a HETAS registered installer and please god don’t stack combustible kiln dried logs next to a heat source 😭
