Hello
We are thinking of knocking a hole in our quite shallow chimney breast and having the space for a vase or even a small electric stove. If anyone has similar can you tell me how deep the space is please. And if you have a stove does it come out beyond the chimney breast at all?

How shallow is your chimney breast @Snoods? You will, of course, be governed by the 'builder's opening' revealed when your fireplace is opened up. That is the recess within the chimney breast from when the house was originally built.

We have two, although neither are particularly shallow -

  1. we opened up ourselves before having a wood burner professionally installed last year. That opening is 40cm deep (the chimney breast - which must have once had a fireplace backing onto it in the room behind - is a whopping 74cm deep).

  2. is actually a faux fireplace. We created an opening by building a 'box' in our integral garage that sits behind this room. This was done specifically with our Everhot electric stove in mind (and because the room was devoid of character features!), although we were governed by the dimensions of the reclaimed fireplace surround we already had. That opening is 55cm deep.

Neither stove projects out beyond the front of the chimney breast/wall, although I have seen others that do. If you only plan to put a vase in it, shallow is fine.

Pics of ours attached for clarity.

Thank you! It’s fake so only about 25cm. If only for decor I think we’ll be okay but interested to see others. Thanks so much for this. Yours look amazing by the way
