If you live in a Victorian terrace, what is your hallway like?

We have a pretty typical London mid-row terrace - 3 beds, open plan kitchen/living area. I like the house, love the area and the only thing that pains me is the narrow hallway. How do you manage shoes/scooters/bikes/general crap in the narrow space? Any top tips or space savers or DYI magic tricks? Ours always looks gloomy, untidy and messy, despite having minimal stuff stored there.
I'd love to see photos if anyone feels comfortable sharing.

I’ve moved the coats under the stairs but they are competing with the hoover and ironing board. Our hallway opens out a little as it goes to the back of the house - the left side of it has the stairs and the right side continues as a hallway into the kitchen. The shoes go on the wall to the left, in front of the stairs if that makes sense. But it looks like about 50 people live in this house at the moment the numbers of shoes dumped there :)

I got this shoe cupboard from Dunelm

DC1 has a foldable Micro Scooter tucked behind the door. We have a low cupboard for shoes with a flat top which we can sit on or stack parcels on. Our folded pram fits between the door and the low cupboard. Then we have coat hooks on the inside of the cupboard under the stairs to hang back packs and children’s coats. We also have full length cupboard between the back of the stairs and the kitchen where we hang adult coats and have more shoes. DC2’s scooter can’t be folded (going to switch for a folded model when he’s older) so that unfortunately floats about! We have a bicycle store in the front garden so thankfully don’t have to worry about those.

Do you have stairs in the hall @Pigtailsandall? If you have access to the side of the staircase, you could have drawers built in? Something like this:

This is lovely! We do have stairs and a small cupboard under the stairs but I have a washing machine there (and a short rack which has a few jackets and kids oats)

I'm dreaming of a pull-out shoe storage under the lower section of the stairs.

Yes it's the eleven billion shoes that gives me anxiety!!

@Nobumsonthetableyour stain glass window are to die for! What I can see of your hallway looks great.

I bought a tall wooden bookcase with deep shelves and use this for shoes - so much more shoe storage and also stronger than flimsy shoe racks!

I don't have young children anymore, so it's a bit easier - I only let them leave one pair of shoes downstairs and their school bags go up at the weekend. Our scooters were stored in the back garden - the kids got used to taking them straight through. I did try various different storage solutions but found that the shoes/bags/hats/ just expanded to fill whatever I used. So now, it's one pair of shoes and the rest is stored in their bedrooms.

We have a very narrow Victorian hallway with no usable understairs space. It's opens a little once you get 2-3m into the house.

We have an IKEA shoe cabinet (which also acts as a useful ledge/dumping ground) towards where the stairs are, and some coat hooks in the narrow part (between stairs and front door). Coats used to be closer towards the house but better for them to be in the narrowest part. Bags also get hung up on those hooks.

We also have an IKEA skadis pegboard up which holds keys, sunglasses, bags for life and all sorts of other bits and bobs. I dream of a more spacious hallway one day!

However it does look quite nice - we have a gold circular mirror on top of the shoe cabinet and the coat hooks and shoe cabinet top are made out of oak (not from IKEA - I replaced the normal IKEA top with oak).

If we planned to stay in our house long term we would get Clever Closet or similar to convert our understairs cupboard. I've not done so because of the cost but also because we have a cellar and that makes things complicated (need to build a floor over it and also worried about dry rot if we block it up).

Bikes and scooters were my main bugbears so we got a bike shed for the front garden and scooters used to live in the car boot. Not solved the rest of the general crap issues yet though (mainly shoes and coats).

LemondrizzleShark · 28/09/2025 20:26

Bike shed out the front is a game changer honestly. And we have two of these (very similar to the dunelm ones). And a lamp on a timer so I can see where I’m going when I walk through the front door - makes it feel much cosier.

We have a hallway the width of the front door. After years of researching and trying out different extra narrow shoe solutions, and stepping over shoes, bags, coats all the time, we now just have a triple wardrobe at the back of the living room. And another shoe cabinet at the front of the living room. I dream of a boot room!

mambojambodothetango · 28/09/2025 20:44

Wow we didn't even have a hallway in our Victorian terrace! It was straight off pavement into front room which acted as lounge, hallway, study and playroom. Once the front door was shut the buggy would just go across the front door.

This is also quite nice! Is t meant to be a bench - i.e. can you sit at the top you put your shoes on?

mobbortimer · 28/09/2025 22:47

No young kids anymore, which helps re scooters etc! We have coats in a cupboard under the stairs and a mirror/rug/ikea trones shoe cabinets with a wood top (wood top not from ikea) in the skinny hall, which is only the width of the front door and a real bugbear. I have a couple of baskets on top for keys, hairbrushes etc and use 2 of the shoe cabinets for umbrellas, hats, gloves etc. Everyone still mostly leaves their shoes on the rug rather than putting in the shoe cabinets...

TheLette · 29/09/2025 09:55

Oh we also have a bike shed in our front garden, an Asgard one. This is a game changer and definitely worth the investment if you can afford. I think it technically requires planning permission but everyone seems to ignore that.

We also have an Asgard! Very expensive but DH loves it.

chiefscoutsgoldaward · 29/09/2025 19:22

Yes, ours is an Asgard as well. From memory they are the only ones that thefts from are covered by contents insurance. We didn't bother with planning for ours either as noone on our road has!
