Problem sewage from new local developments

I live on a private road, but it turns out the sewers are still owned by the water company, leaving us with no control over their usage. Seems a bit weird to me, but here we are! A new housing development of about 400 houses has led the developers and the water company to decide that all the foul water from this development should be directed into our old, small sewer. Our residents' association strongly objected at the time, and the water company's own survey admitted the sewer could "probably" handle sewage from an extra 24 homes. We were dismissed with promises of a pumping station to regulate the flow and prevent overloading.

Fast forward two years, and the houses are starting to fill up. Only around 150 are occupied, and we're already facing horrible problems. There's a constant smell of sewage outside, and the pumping causes a vacuum that sucks water out of our p-traps and u-bends, resulting in a terrible smell inside our homes. Despite the efforts of our residents' association, city councillors, and the parish council, we seem powerless to have this foul water diverted. The developer and water company appear determined to stick with their unreasonable plan.

Has anyone else experienced issues with sewage from nearby developments and managed to find a satisfactory solution?

What Planning Conditions were applied? Have a look on the Planning Portal at the original application. A development of that size would normally have to have a sustainable drainage plan - are the builders in breach of the conditions? Maybe also try the water regulator? Or the Environment Agency if this is causing pollution? Sorry no specific ideas but those are the things I’d try first
