Small bathroom into two rooms?

planesick · 22/09/2025 22:58

Is it possible to turn my full bathroom...(shower over short bath, toilet and sink) into two rooms. Shower/wet room (with a small sink) and a separate toilet (perhaps with a sink on the top). I keep flipping between yes, it will be fine and no, it won't work. Argh! I have attached a current floorplan to help.
Thank you in advance for any offerings.

Potentially you could but I think you'd end up with two horribly claustrophobic rooms, with no space to undress/turn around. It would be expensive and more complex to remove the window and replace with two smaller windows, plus making-good brickwork or render outside.

You'd also devalue your property; most people would prefer the toilet in the bathroom and to have one nice, usable space.

Obvious question is why? Advice wise I’d measure it out and then mock it up using flattened carboard boxes or something for the wall. My initial reaction would be no, it’ll be horrible and a lot of effort unless there is some really specific reason you want the toilet separate.

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 23/09/2025 07:21

Why do you want to? That's my question too.

CatherinedeBourgh · 23/09/2025 07:30

The minimum you could reasonably have a door is 70cm, with frame you need to allow at least 80 per door. That's 160. Then at least 5cm for the separating wall, that's 1.65. So you have only 10 cm wider than the door in each room.

So technically yes, you can do it. You will have two 90 cm wide rooms, one with a sink at the back and the other would have to be a wet room, possibly with a folding door to allow for the sink.

But it wouldn't be particularly nice. I had similar (in Japan, where it's fairly standard) and would much rather have a single room with a bit more space.

You will want a sink in with the loo too surely?

planesick · 23/09/2025 09:14

To be fair, I don't want to do it. DD13 is taking longer showers and my husband doesn't want to have to wait! I told him to give her a timer...but he is stubborn 🤦
I didn't think it would work either, so thanks everyone!

Room for an understairs toilet downstairs assuming you are in a house?

Polyestered · 23/09/2025 10:09

It’s far too small.

Unfortunately not. Under sthe stairs isn't big enough and has tricky access.

I can’t see it would work. Adding another door on that wall would mean you can’t attach anything there. Plus it would be extremely tight.

you could replace the bath with a shower (drawn here like a lolipop) and a dry-changing-room (D) which would have a small bench + hooks + locking door, a bit like a changing room in a public pool.

then DD can use the shower & changing room, and DH can visit the toilet while she is in there. she would have to know not to walk out of the changing room while he is on the loo. but if she can manage that, this might work.

we once rented a holiday house with this kind of arrangement and it was OK.

you might also need to hang the main door of the room in the other direction, but that isn't hard.

can you add a downstairs toilet? The solution is DD takes shorter showers. No-one needs to spend ages in the bathroom, especially when you only have one toilet and people could be waiting. Surely it’s once a day at most, if she is going in the shower she could ask if anyone needs the toilet (if she will be longer, shaving her legs etc). Spending a fortune to create two small rooms and devaluing your house is crazy when you can just set a few rules / routines around showering.

HarryVanderspeigle · 24/09/2025 07:12

I have the tiny bathroom and separate toilet situation. It works for us because someone can use the loo when someone else is in the shower, although you then need to go downstairs to wash hands in the kitchen. There is really nowhere to add a loo downstairs without losing too much living space and needing some serious plumbing.

But I do know that it will put people off if I ever want to sell, as people prefer having a bathroom they can move around in and change easily.

This an option?
