Decent quality bathroom furniture?

Fasterthan40 · 22/09/2025 10:43

Looking to redo our family bathroom soon. I want it to last. I will buy Amtico flooring, probably Eastbrook bath, loo, sink (tho’ welcome any other suggestions), but I don’t know where to source furniture (will need to maximise quite a small space so likely a cupboard and work surface next to the sink and a wall cupboard to ceiling above the loo). Am I best to ask my carpenter to make it- use wood, melamine? Any good brands that are durable (careless children, heavy use)?

In the process of having our small bathroom refitted after recently downsizing.
We are using a local family Bathroom shop supplier and our own builder.
We visited the showroom and then the owner came out to measure and advised about what would fit to make best use of the space.
At our previous house his firm did our en suite and it was lovely.
If you can find a local firm like this that would be a good start. I also sent for catalogues and samples from some of his suppliers.

Oh that is really helpful, thank you. Hadn’t thought of a real life shop(!). Will have a look around to see if I can find somewhere good. Will look at your links now. Thank you

I bought beautiful Amtico flooring...it white with a sparkle in it. It stains yellow! I have a plastic bin with a round yellow stain underneath and something else that has stained yellow under the sink area.

We are very careful so it's been really disappointing.

Fasterthan40 · 22/09/2025 17:32

oh no, that’s disappointing. My parents and PiL have Amtico that is decades old, one lot older than me, and it’s worn well. Maybe they’ve changed quality like Hunter wellies etc. . I definitely don’t want to have to redo it anytime soon. Hence looking for durable bathroom furniture too.

Lots of LVT now ( I know Amtico do this) We weren’t happy with Amtico flooring in our lounge and dining room in our last house. Ongoing issues with the glue going black.
We had Karndean in our en suite and it was great easy to clean and felt warm underfoot.
Bathroom shop owner said to go darker than tiles with flooring. Picked similar for our bathroom.

Fasterthan40 · 22/09/2025 21:04

I have karndean in my ensuite, maybe will go for that again. I chose it purely because it was pretty. Interesting about flooring should be darker than tiles, guess to make room look more defined. Thinking pale jade green tiles and either oak effect or black and white chequerboard. Ensuite is dark blues and super restful space but need a brighter quicker turnaround space for kids in their bathroom.

We went with ceramic tiles that look like wooden planks for our floor, and underfloor heating to make sure it’s warm. It’s been fantastic. Might be worth thinking about as no worries about staining etc?

WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 22/09/2025 22:03

We replaced builder grade pedestal sinks with vanity from Roper Rhodes (Hampton) and HIB (Kingsbury)
Very happy with quality of both of them

Fasterthan40 · 23/09/2025 07:27

@WhereDoesThisToiletGoyes that’s exactly it, builder grade is what I want to avoid. We are having to replace doors on recent building work as I hadn’t really understood that you could buy nice doors or cheap doors and that we had cheap doors by builder default. Makes sense as I think he was trying to save us money but it’s more in the long run. Will look up both of those.

We have ceramic tiles and electric UFH atm in family bathroom - tho’ ours are ugly grey marble style, yours sound much prettier. But it’s quite a slippy and smashable surface when teen drops her ££ face cream etc.. so I thought LVT would be more forgiving. And probably heat up quicker even if doesn’t hold the heat. Somewhat regretful we didn’t have ceramic in kitchen with UFH but again we are all fairly clumsy and likelihood of smashing lots of stuff was high.

I think some plastics react with light and heat to discolour LVT. We have a patch under our kitchen bin that's the same. The bin stays in the same place so it's not a problem.

I chose a Tavistock landsdown vanity - brilliant. You need either a solid wood carcass, or metal, for under the basin. Anything else will separate from water and condensation - I moved every 2 years for most of my 50-odd years and I’ve been in a lot of properties, I have experience of this.

I would only have tiles in a bathroom, they’ll last forever. I don’t think the newer linos last in the same way they did a few decades ago. There are many, many lovely designs, that are hard wearing and don’t slip. Research the slip rating and hardness. Make sure they are suitable for wet areas.

Fasterthan40 · 23/09/2025 13:44

Have ordered lots of lovely brochures. This is really helpful, thank you for posting as I just don’t know the names of brands to search. This will be very useful to work out what it is that we need. And then I’ll do the maths on how much it will cost. Excited to get it into shape. As it’s that and the last remaining single glazed sash windows that need replacing . After that I can move onto garden rooms and garden landscaping. Houses are quite non stop financial challenges, aren’t they?

I’ve been thinking about a wall hung vanity with a full basin covering the whole top. With either drawers or a cupboard. But I’m worried about leaks/splashes. Any advice? How water resistant is this sort of furniture? Thanks

Fasterthan40 · 23/09/2025 18:25

@KnottyAutyI bumped into my carpenter and he was saying to put on a quartz top. Maybe that would help?

So my tiler guy said that melamine is pretty waterproof. That said I have a sink mounted on top of a counter in my bathroom and wipe it madly. I would wonder how much you need to seal around it? And whether different quality units last better. Maybe again a bathroom shop question?

if you’re good at mopping up then a sink on worktop will be fine… I’m thinking tenants so want non destruct!
