What to do with this Edwardian house hallway

I’m keeping the terrazzo 100%, love it and want to get it restored !
It’s the mock Tudor beams on the ceiling I’m struggling with. I want to keep it but not sure what kind of colours I should go for in the rest of the hallway? The terrazzo has reds in but I really don’t like red !
I’m thinking half way panelling ?
What kind of runner should I go with ? Should I paint the banister black to tye in with the beams ? So many ideas but I’m not creative enough to execute them !
Would love some help

I’d paint out those fake beams in the ceiling. Same colour as the rest of the ceiling

The arts and crafts period went in for timber panneling. Not painted.

This might lift the space

Id Google arts and crafts interiors

i wouldn’t have painted panelling or a dado.

Think more opulent and full height

cocobelon · 20/09/2025 13:07

Can I ask what’s off putting about the beams ? I’m trying to keep as much character of the house as possible

They are there to mimic the ‘Tudor feel’ and purely decorative . They are not structural

Oh I know they’re not structural. But wanted to keep them as they are original to the house !

My house is similar to this. There's no way I'd have Tudor beams in an Edwardian house!

WatchingTheDetective · 20/09/2025 14:48

Are you sure the beams are original to the house? I'd be really surprised if that was the case. The Edwardian style was a particular style and they didn't mix it with Tudor architecture.

cocobelon · 20/09/2025 14:52

They’ve been there since at least the 50’s, very possible the wonder before the current vendors did it ! All I know is the current vendors haven’t changed a thing in the house

OP posts:
cocobelon · 20/09/2025 14:52

The front of the house is mock Tudor so possibly it was added when built or the last owner did it

cocobelon · 20/09/2025 14:58

Okay so the beams are horrible then? 😆 should we just paint them white as a pp suggested?

Any other ideas for the rest? Edwardian houses did seem to have some form of panelling from what I’ve seen online. I prefer the tung and groove ones but don’t know if that would look any good in a hallway

It's too hospital corridor at the moment.

A smoky green would reduce the glare and look good against the red in the floor. The banister rail would be better as dark wood (leave the panelling white at least whilst you get used to the change in main colour).

Rather than the white modern radiator, cover it with a darker wood cover (one with a vertical slat front - vertical lines of dark wood were used often in furniture of the period) that will also give you somewhere to put keys/decorative bowl - green glass was popular, especially where they could well have have paraffin lamps/plant. This then sits in front of a gold/bronze framed mirror at a level where you can actually check hair before leaving, echoing original designs which would have included a hallstand.

A runner in a natural but darker tone than the AI mockup would be good to make it feel warmer.

For plants, a Peace lily was a common motif (gold, brass or bronze toned pot cover) and Aspidistras are pretty much perfect for a large floor level plant.

I would imagine they’re original to when the house was built. It’s in keeping.

Have you looked at Rennie Macintosh for some interior inspiration. His work was of the period although more artdeco but nevertheless it’s an inspirational starting point
Then of course the arts and crafts period

Edwardian style is different but a lot of Tudor mock houses were built around that time.

Panelling up to dado is very Victorian. I’d go for panelling up to a picture rail or to the ceiling.

I liked this panelling I saw and If you can see the ceiling has beams too, I don’t know know though how I could get the bannister like that natural colour wood, would it need sanding back and staining ?

It's very cold so would paint the walls in a warm neutral colour. Natural Hessian or similar. That would tie into any warm colours in the floor. If you include panelling then it could be a shade darker but tbh I wouldn't panel personally. Dress with tall art/mirrors with natural wood frames to tie in with Edwardian proportions but keep it modern.

I would keep the banisters and ceiling white though and yes paint the beams to match the ceiling.

The rugs could be in similar warm colours.

I wouldn’t sand it’s
a lot of work
you might sand away the crisp edges and detail
there might be lead in old paint

Id use
peelaway

DrPrunesqualer · 20/09/2025 15:52

Wicks might do it too.

Lovely parquet flooring on that image of yours OP. You haven’t found any under your ground floor carpets have you ? Properties similar to yours sometimes had herringbone parquet

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 20/09/2025 16:13

The original owners would probably have decorated the spaces in between the beams with coloured and patterned paper ( the beams would also have been coloured, possibly with gilded decorations. ) So you could use a patterned paper, perhaps with stars so not too difficult to match , take the background colour and use a deeper tone on the beams and a Lighter tone on the walls.

I wish my hall was like this!

Seaside3 · 20/09/2025 16:22

Take a photo and head to farrow and ball. You can upload your photo and change the colours. I know you said no red, but im a fan of etruscan red at the moment and I think it might work. But only if you paint the beams to blend, otherwise your running the risk of it looking like a pub.

I would also change the radiator.

Oh, I would add a lovely big cheese plant too.
