Reasonable price for porch/garage flat roof

Can anyone advise a reasonable price for a builder/roofer to replace asphalt (not structure underneath) across a porch & front of garage). It's not much more than 1.5 metres wide & took them 4hrs max..
A very vulnerable gentleman I know has just had it done for £2,000.
He wasn't given the paperwork until after completion and then it was £340 more than the verbal quote as they said VAT hadn't been included.
Fortunately he hadn't paid yet as they are apparently returning with a card machine. I have spoken to the company owner who is currently on holiday & he says he will tell his employee not to return until we have spoken when he gets back next week.

Day rate for a builder could be between £200-£300 plus materials. Materials are often about half the cost of the job. So if you want to be generous I would say £600?

Be aware that if the home Owner has been targeted once, there will be lots more attempts in the near future. One of my neighbours had ongoing issues for a while after they were scammed for a roof repair.

Geneticsbunny's estimate might be a reasonable cost. Just a heads up if they are charging VAT ask for their VAT registration number and check it is actually registered with the VAT office. They'd probably be interested to know if someone was charging customers VAT but not paying it on to the Govt.

Definitely would not pay the VAT that should have been advised at time of quote. Unfortunately he accepted the price, but you can try negotiating at £800/£1,000. My brother got stung for some roofing/guttering, they wanted £6,000 which he agreed then panicked and phoned me, I told him to pay £2,000 as they started pulling guttering/roofing down straightaway. They did the job ok, were quite pushy, saying to my brother that you can afford this, let us see your bank statements, luckily he didn’t. Lesson learnt he now won’t answer the door anymore.

Thanks for the above responses. I actually support this gentleman in a professional capacity - though unfortunately he didn't speak to us before arranging the work. The builder went very quiet when I said who I work for - a well known national charity. The fact that he didn't immediately defend the pricing suggests he knows it's too high. There will need some negotiation. The gentleman is clearly vulnerable - a wheelchair user & not even been able to get out of the house to see the work. Until recently he would have had more than enough cash to pay them but fortunately this has been sorted recently.

My house looks similar to the photo (West Mids area), and requires the same work on the porch and garage roof.

Quote as follows: Price to strip existing roof off at the front of the house, install new timber joists, fix OSB boards down, fibreglass roof and seal against the house.
Clad over wood around garage door with white plastic trim. Board roof inside garage area.
All rubbish removed
Materials and labour
Total cost of work completed £1,250

I would ask the tradesman for his VAT number to confirm that he is on the VAT register.

AranciataMele thanks this is really interesting. His roof was asphalt/felt and not sure if this is cheaper but interesting to see your detail. I can't imagine the work completed in this case involved quite as much - especially as it took them only 4 hours. I'm looking forward to my conversation with the builder on Monday!

Fibreglass roof would be much pricier and take longer than asphalt.
