Looped Electricity Supply Experiences

We have a looped electricity supply attached to next door. The cable goes to their property and loops across to us.
To unloop it, the electcity company would need to either dig up my drive, or preferably, dig up the border. The drive is block paved.
Looking for recent experiences of unlooping. Can you request a preference for where the cable goes? Can we switch our meter from inside the garage to outside on the garage wall at the same time?

We had ours unlooped when neighbours put in a car charger and found out we were both on a loop. The Electricity Board sorted it out and ran the new cable under the driveway making sure it was out of the way of our garage access. They did a nice job and made it all good afterwards, the only evidence it’s there is a tarmac line across the pavement.
I doubt they’ll move your meter though.

theyll have a way lever to be able to connect it to Nextdoor there will be a reason it was done like this in the 1st place
to go from overhead to underground is not always possible
as the pavement might be full underneath with other services such as gas ,water and drainage
they need a regulation depth and clearance from other services

Whilst you want it to come down the boarder of your drive it depends on the location of the main feed

why do you want this done ?

also requested work like this will cost absolute THOUSANDS

there is an ongoing maintenance cycle on these and they will be replacing the insulated rubber tails that feed your property

That will a been because the existing cable wasn’t big enough to support the additional power draw
you were lucky they did it for you because they had to
if you requested this work it’s chargeable

We are just going through this but we are the first house on the loop, and our upgrade requires our neighbours to be unlooped. We have installed a heat pump and couldn’t have known before starting our work that the supply would be a loop that means we can’t currently get the 100A main fuse we need. So far UKPN have been hard to contact, I’m planning on getting my ‘irritating customer’ mask on soon.

According to National Grid, it won’t cost us anything. I suppose if we want to move the meter to outside the garage wall for it we convert the garage then we have to pay for that part.

We want it done because we are hoping to install and EV charger next year.

Just wondered what people’s experiences are.

When you request it make sure you stress it’s for charger and need more power capacity that is generally free
if you want it done for say cosmetic reasons as in going underground rather than overhead or moving it for building work they will charge you

Thank you @rwalker

Well in my opinion that is something the installer should have checked beforehand. They should have spotted that the main fuse was less than required (63A I guess?) and flagged that your mains supply was currently not up to the job and needed upgrading. Then you could check the possibility of upgrading it with the DNO prior to installation. It should be a basic part of the pre-installation checklist in my opinion.
