Alternative to whole house re wire ?

Our shower was giving out electic shocks.
dh tested it and it was live !
An electrician came round for 4 hours this am- floor board s up- he couldn’t find the actual problem but said the readings on the entire house are not good.
He recommended a full house re wire as the house is basically bodged. ‘ the reading s arebad’
He told is not to use the shower as unsafe .
Are there are any ways of avoiding a full re wire as we would struggle to afford this and the subsequent re decoration ?

If the electrician spent 4 hours investigating, and told you there were multiple problems throughout the house, you will just have to go ahead - it's not worth not doing it properly.

Agree with maslinpan, it’s better to get it sorted out properly. If you stay in the house it will avoid further problems and cost in the future. If you try and sell the house without doing the work then any problems are likely to be picked up by potential buyers.

Yes there is such a thing as a partial rewire.
If I were you I would get a second opinion.

My experience is that large electrical firms will want to do big jobs and start from scratch in order to make it worth their while. Independent local electricians are more willing to find solutions to problems with your existing problem. Can someone locally recommend a reliable electrician?

The outcome might be the same, but you'll have heard it from two people.

Thanks - this was a local electrian- its not the re wire that is ultimately bothering me - its very expensive and mo longer produced wallpaper - that i based the rooms round ( lights , rugs etc) that will get damaged.

if we had plain walls of white paint - the impact of the re wire would be less.
I know it sounds small- but the whole bottom floor of the house will look different and not how we want it as the paper cant be replaced. It was onky all re decorated last year( id stored the wallpaper for three years as i knew it was just right and planned the rooms around it )

Get that second opinion quickly as it might just be good luck there hasn’t been an accident or someone has got a shock. I had similar in a former house (got 2 opinions) and was told I very lucky nothing serious had happened ( think fire / serious electric shock) . Frankly the wallpaper is a real first world problem if there are multiple issues around the home with your wiring. Hopefully it won’t be a full rewire.

I didn’t mean that to sound like you wouldn’t be honest about the issues, more that having the work done would make the house much easier to sell if you did decide to.
