Why is it so difficult to find rental the property with no carpeting?

I’ve been looking for a new property for months. It doesn’t even matter whether it’s a budget flat or a more premium one — 99% of what I find has carpeting, at least in the bedrooms. I find this really annoying and upsetting.
What’s the point of putting carpet in a property that’s meant to serve many different tenants? I can understand choosing it when you buy a home for yourself, but in a rental it makes no sense. The carpet won’t be changed for decades, and in the meantime it causes real problems. I have a dust mite allergy, and living with carpet makes my life miserable — I sneeze constantly, and nothing really helps. On top of that, I have a toddler about to start potty training and a dog. Instead of simply wiping the floor, I’m forced to use chemicals to clean the carpet. And carpets are unhygienic: they trap dirt, and even when they look clean, they’re not.
Builders even put carpet in new builds, though the insulation there is already very good. Is this just a cultural thing? If tenants prefer, they can always add a rug, but when a place comes with wall-to-wall carpet, I’m left with no choice.

I imagine flats have carpet for sound insulation in many cases.

It's miserable to live below a flat which has wooden or worse, laminated floors. I'm sorry about your allergy though

They should be cleaned between tennants.
Put your own rugs over the top if you are worried about getting them grubby.

Needmorelego · 12/09/2025 17:05

Also soap, water and a really good scrub is fine for potty training accidents.
You don't need chemicals.

It doesn’t even matter if it’s a flat or a house, period property or a new build. Any of those would have carpeting at least in the bedrooms

It’s much cheaper than wood or vinyl, and more hardwearing and forgiving for noise than laminate - especially with flats (where the lease may also prohibit hard flooring.)

We consider both flats and houses. It doesn’t even matter because carpets are everywhere

You are right that carpets are unhygienic. That's one of my pet hates too.

Needmorelego · 12/09/2025 17:08

Personally I find carpets make a property warmer.
Sorry @OlliEliza you just need to get a really powerful hoover.

Filofaxforlife · 12/09/2025 17:13

Carpets are much cheaper to replace. Sadly, some tenants have little regard for the properties they rent causing damage to the fabric of the property leading to choices being made that make financial sense.

housethatbuiltme · 12/09/2025 17:23

Carpet is often be new in rentals, most BTL use special letting companies that will 50 shades of grey carpet the whole house for 500-£600.

We are moving out of our rental and they already told us no need to worry about cleaning because the whole place will be gutted in a referb before it can be re-let.

While loads of people on mumsnet act like bouncing from rental to rental every 6-12 month is entirely normal it really isn't most people stay in one house for years and recommended rental guideline on carpets is to replace them every 5 years or so (although they often won't until the break between tenants then they'll do everything new).

CopperWhite · 12/09/2025 17:24

Most people want carpet in their bedrooms because it’s warmer, and as estate usually upstairs, it limits noise. That’s why you won’t find many properties without it, because they are marketed to appeal to the majority.

Work9to5 · 12/09/2025 17:28

I wish my bloody neighbours had carpet. They sound like they're clog dancing. Noisy feckers 🙄

Danikm151 · 12/09/2025 17:37

Housing associations and councils usually strip the carpets of any propertied between tenants for hygiene reasons.

When I moved into my house there was no flooring apart from the kitchen and bathroom, I was on a budget and carpet was my cheapest option. I have a carpet cleaner and use it regularly.

Smartiepants79 · 12/09/2025 17:40

I love carpets. Warm and soft and cosy.
Wooden floors are ok but noisy and cold.
HATE laminate.

SheilaFentiman · 12/09/2025 17:41

Rugs are a trip hazard

I want cosy carpet in my bedroom not cold hard floor

BotterMon · 12/09/2025 17:42

Because the Brits love their carpets. I agree with you and hate them. Being brought up abroad I am used to tiled/wood floors even in flats.

DeftPoet · 12/09/2025 17:48

I think it is partly a cultural thing though - have not seen the carpet obsession in other countries I've lived in! When I first moved to the UK I also found it a struggle - my first flat even had carpets in the toilet 😱
Quite like a carpet now, I must be assimilated after 20+ years
