Can this space be a toilet utility ?

We don’t need the external door here and I’m wondering if I can use the hallway / toilet to have a loo and a small utility… but I can’t work out the configuration. The toilet is big enough to house a washing machine, but ideally I’d like separate spaces.

anyone here with a cunning plan for a layout?

What is the room at the top of picture? Tbh, for the effort of plumbing and wall rejigging, I'd just whack the washer in the shower room. It's handy anyway to just chuck clothes in.

Where’s the nearest water? And what’s above it? You need to think about the soil pipe.

LemondrizzleShark · 10/09/2025 21:27

Is that a shower or a cupboard next to the toilet?

You can put a small wall up to separate the toilet and washing machine - like this. Just creates a bit more separation.

It’s a bedroom/study. I don’t want to lose any of the bedrooms ideally

The water is in the toilet, so that’s all plumbed in and should be fine

It’s just a cupboard, but sizeable!
those are nice actually, I really like them

In that case I'd absolutely put the white goods in the toilet and keep the corridor. The vibrations and noise through the wall of a dryer and washer working is so disruptive.

Oh that’s a good point. The washing machine is currently outside so I forget that actually it is noisy. I will stop over complicating it!

i’d turn the toilet around and into a separate space with a sliding door, then have a good amount of space for utility /washing machine stack/ linen storage. See sketch below

I love this - such a great idea, thank you!

What’s around outside of the space currently? If you wanted to maintain access out (ie to hang out sheets outside) you could keep the existing door, or maybe even put it where the window is (sketches below)

Toilet in a utility room is very odd imho.

It’s more “washing machine in a bathroom” which is totally normal outside of the UK…

PuppyMonkey · 10/09/2025 22:41

Is OP outside the UK?

Not odd at all imo. We've had several lootility rooms over the years and about to have another here (UK) as they've worked well for us previously.

MotherofPufflings · 11/09/2025 08:05

What are the dimensions of the room?

TizerorFizz · 11/09/2025 08:52

I never like loos in utility rooms. Where is the sink going? People need to wash their hands? Hand washing sink for clothes?

Geneticsbunny · 11/09/2025 11:46

I would do the plan above but put the loo on the external wall and have a door opening from the loo into the main hallway rather than accessing it through the utility.

TizerorFizz · 12/09/2025 09:49

@Geneticsbunny Yes. Door into hall and provide a wash basin!

We’re in the uk, but I feel like it’s more practical there than in the kitchen, which I really don’t like!

i think we’d need both. A small hand basin in the toilet itself and a utility sink in the utility room
