Remove wall that divides kitchen/utility for bigger kitchen

Trying to decide how to increase size of kitchen without the expense of an extension. We have a utility that I thought we could use, perhaps making it smaller ( behind a pocket door) and removing the wall We also have the dining area in the kitchen that we use and the garden room to sit in. Has anyone got any suggestions as how to reorganise this space to make the kitchen more user friendly Ideally I'd like a pantry space, an island with an induction top. We would get rid of the range cooker.

maybe combine the utility with the WC, can take a bit of space from the hall/coat storage? Something like this sketch. Personally I’d like a bit more utility and less pantry but this layout could be tweaked to accommodate that

You could add space from the hall and utility to the kitchen and have a smaller utility (u).

here I’ve also drawn a pantry (p) but you could drop that for a better utility space.

These designs are really good. I would have never thought of a loo-tility.
I think both designs would work really well. Thank you.

Whats to the left of the floor plan? Can tiu share the full thing?

Am just right in thinking the main entrance is where the arrow is?

Gimmesomeskin · 06/09/2025 10:41

Yes arrow main entrance. Utility has door to outside which isn't shown. Garden room is quite narrow and windows mainly. We like the living room separate. The kitchen is quite dark during the day until afternoon as west facing.

Are any of the other rooms under used?

Gimmesomeskin · 06/09/2025 12:52

The study and dining room are under used. The family room is used as an office.
We prefer maximising use in garden, living and family rooms as they face the garden.

Why can't you push out and square off the garden room / kitchen into one big kitchen diner?

Basically bring the top right outside space into the house.

In that case I would turn the study into a loo and utility with a big wall of storage. Then I'd knock the exiting loo, utility and cloak cupboard out, pop up a new wall from the bottom of the stairs down, taking a chunk of the hallway. Big glass double doors in that new wall into my huge new kitchen. I'd have one of those built in corner pantries and build the kitchen out from that.

Could you make the drawing room, kitchen and garden room one big space?

Use dining room as a smaller lounge for evenings and family room could be playroom/toy storage.

You could easily have small sofa, tv and island as well as table with a huge open plan back section.

OttersAreMySpiritAnimal · 06/09/2025 14:40

Excuse the crappy drawing. Pink dots are sink and loo. New wall marked on black with green for the doors. Lilac marks cupboards, worktops, pantry and island.

I’d make the downstairs loo larger to combine with utility all in one

id put a hidden pantry on the blue section with a secret door from the units in yelliw

id have an island sticking out, so you can sit at the end of the island and look into the garden

then a table in front between garden and island

Id knock down the wall between the dinning room and kitchen - expanding the area and then using the dinning room more as you could put seating of choice and have the area as a large kitchen living area

Id keep the family room and make the study the office - giving people to still go off and have some quite time or tv time in the family room.

Taking the wall down between kitchen and drawing room would probably be the easiest and most effective way to increase the space.

Seaside3 · 07/09/2025 21:35

Ok, it's a bit different, but i would... turn the current kitchen into a hidden utility and pantry space. You access it via a hidden door in a run of units. Then, remove the wall between kitchen and current drawing room, put a run of units there. You won't need loads of kitchen as you have the hidden pantry.

The current utility becomes a downstairs bathroom, and the family room/office becomes either a spare room/2nd lounge/office, depending on what you need.

The current drawing room becomes a lounge.

I'd simplify the number of rooms, it all feels like lots of small rooms that could be better.

I agree with simplifying the number of rooms. After living here for over the layout means the house is not user friendly. I like your idea of hidden utility, especially as the kitchen at the moment is sort of tucked in the corner.
I really like all the ideas for different reasons. Definitely will need a lot of thought as to how it would work best for us. Thank you for all your suggestions/layouts.

I’m just about to do the opposite and combine utility and wc.

GasPanic · 08/09/2025 10:44

Thing is that you will have all the expense of doing the mods but unlikely to add much value to the house as you aren't increasing the floor space. If you extend you will get that.

I would price up both internal mods and an external extension.
