Selling: use solicitor in my town or house town?

I hope that makes sense! I'm selling my house in another city about 2 hours away, is it best to get a solicitor close to the house or close to where I live now? I'm not sure of the steps and if/when I would need to meet the ssolicitor. Also do I need to appoint a solicitor before I receive an offer or wait?

Solicitor can be anywhere. I signed and returned nig documents by registered plat but there wasn't many that required this

I would use one where I live during the buying process. It’s convenient to hand deliver documents and deal with anything unexpected.

Definitely use a local solicitor. We made the mistake of using one near to where we were buying (we are relocating) instead of where we currently live. The guy has been inconsistent and poor.

We were recommended a couple of local ones by the Estate Agents selling our house, Solicitors that they deal with all the time so they are all familiar with each other and know one another. We opted to go with one near where we are buying, thinking we would 'give some work' to a Solicitor where we are moving to.

We honestly wish we had gone local. The local solicitors know the area you are selling in and the properties in that area and its just so much more convenient.

Can you ask your EA to make recommendations?

It’s useful to have someone local, so that, if you do need to clarify something in person, you can do that easily. Theoretically, it shouldn’t be necessary these days, but things tend to crop up and you need to be able to deal with them promptly.

I’d look at reviews, rather than relying just on EA recommendations.

Your town, its 100% easier if you can just pop in. They don't need to be anywhere near the house thats being bought though.

I found local to me helpful - e.g. instead of having to find witnesses, I just went into the office and they witnessed. It was also easier to take in documents, rather than taking them to the post office and sending them. I don't think the greater convenience would be more important than the quality of the solicitor - but if you have good options in both places, I would choose the one where you currently live.

I’m selling a house 200 miles away and have used one local to the house. Two in my own area weren’t interested in taking it on so far away.
