Unrealistic to think a house will come up that don't have pets?

I'm not a pet owner and I'm adamant I don't want to buy a house that has pets but am I being unrealistic? Most of my family have or have had dogs. An EA mentioned it's about 70%. Is that really true, it's seems high to me?

Firstly, I'm mortified by the terrible grammar in my post title 😂. I've got OCD so cleanliness is a huge issue. I've lived in the same house all my life so I'm struggling with the idea of moving but it's not my choice, I live with my parents (circumstances have changed and they can now buy a house. Before someone has a go about me living at home I'm financially not in a position to move out). To whoever mentioned about changing carpets/flooring will that not be expensive?

Firstly, you can’t put this restriction when it’s not even you buying

secondly, yes new carpets could be expensive plus a professional cleaning but buying a house is also expensive! Perhaps you need to save up so you can pay for the clean if you are the one with the issue

allthemiddlechildrenoftheworld · 04/09/2025 15:13

@CactusFlr for goodness sake! pets are not sold with the house! they go with the owners!! stop being pathetic!

ThisIsHowWeDoItThisIsHowWeDoIt · 04/09/2025 15:16

Well that’s just ridiculous then. Advising other people that they should buy a house on the very random criteria of no pets is just silly. And naive and immature. You might as well say that they should only buy one with a red front door or chrome light switches. Those things just don’t matter when you are buying a house.

That is why the TV programme is called ‘location location location’ and not ‘no pets no pets no pets’.

(to the point he had to be seated seperately at primary school because sitting near other children who had pet dander on their clothes could set off a reaction)

Dander allergy is caused by IgE which is exposure based. IgE exists to fight parasites but without constantly steady exposure became hyper sensitive and reacts to all 'foreign DNA' (its the same reaction to dust allergy and hay fever). Complete removal and isolation makes the allergy worse not better. Its the absolute worst thing you can do as you will make the reaction on the next exposure (which will happen) worse.

Oh that's interesting - I know he apparently 'grew out' of it a bit so I wonder if there was some exposure involved!

CommissarySushi · 04/09/2025 15:35

You can't control the house that your parents are buying. You are being massively unreasonable to try and put those restrictions on them.

Icanttakethisanymore · 04/09/2025 15:37

WhatInFreshHell · 04/09/2025 14:24

The people who currently own the house will take the pets with them when they leave surely?

😂imagine if they didn't.

MovingBird123 · 04/09/2025 15:37

I'm with you. Life is a nightmare when my allergies are out of control. When buying a house, I want to be able to live in it. I would anyway be pulling up all carpets though to make it easier to clean dust.

Except it's not even her buying the house

Bitzee · 04/09/2025 15:48

That’s so irrational! Next door but one to me doesn’t have pets, the only one I know of that doesn’t, but it’s a dossy share house so will cost a lot more to put right vs. next door on the other side where they do have a dog but also they’ve done it up no expense spared and have a cleaner twice a week. Also are you also going to rule out young kids because potty training probably means a lot more pee and poop on the floors than you’d get from your typical litter trained cat…?

If it’s your parents house then it’s not really your place but if they were willing then your best is to hold back a few hundred quick for a professional move out clean including the carpets.

Twiglets1 · 04/09/2025 15:54

Sounds like a new build might suit you best @CactusFlr ?

All clean - no previous owners with pets.

KawasakiBabe · 04/09/2025 15:54

Buy a new build, sorted.

janeandmarysmum · 04/09/2025 16:03

When we moved last year the only sign the previous owners had a dog was the neighbours telling us when we moved in. No sign when we viewed and no smell. We did replace the carpets but we'd've done that anyway.

mamagogo1 · 04/09/2025 16:06

Even if the current owner is pet free now, they may have in the past, or previous owners. Buy a new build

CactusFlr · 04/09/2025 16:07

housethatbuiltme · 04/09/2025 14:58

We just bought carpets and underlay for 5 rooms and fitted them ourself and it cost £500.

Thanks for that, that's not a bad price.
Also I can't demand no, but they are taking my concerns into consideration. Their answer is as mentioned on here to change the carpets and have the house cleaned before we move in.

I suppose it’s not dissimilar to objecting to the smell of cigarette smoke in a house or car. It seems to be almost impossible to remove that smell, no matter how much you clean, decorate and replace things.

DH found a second hand car he really liked, but didn’t buy it because, although it had been cleaned extensively, the smell was in the fabric of the roof lining and the seats and plastics. We viewed a house years ago and I couldn't look round it because of the smell. Perhaps the OP feels like that.

cornbunting · 04/09/2025 16:20

Honestly OP, your options are deep cleaning/replacing carpeting, or buy a new build. Even if the current owners of a property don't have pets, it's entirely possible that the people who owned it before them did, you're not going to get the whole pet-owning history of a house when you buy unless it's brand new.

YanTanTetheraPetheraBumfitt · 04/09/2025 16:31

I’d just pay for a professional clean inc having the carpets shampooed.

YanTanTetheraPetheraBumfitt · 04/09/2025 16:32

So in my little group of 4 houses. 3 currently have pets, 1 doesn’t. But the 1 that doesn’t their dog died last year, but if their house was on the market you wouldn’t know there had previously been a dog? Are you going to ask everyone about the animal history?

The previous owners also smoked in the house and honestly... That plus the dogs means the house smells no matter what I do 🤢😆 I'm really hoping that replacing the carpets will solve it?!

SeaAndStars · 04/09/2025 16:42

A home with pets and fastidious owners might be much cleaner than one with no pets and a vacuum that merely gathers dust.

I think, before the carpets are replaced, scrub the floorboards, or whatever the floor is composed of.

@SeaAndStars people without pets can be fastidious too. It’s not either or.

NotJohnsonsBaby · 04/09/2025 16:53

Oh, OP…. GET A BLOODY GRIP!

Novs · 04/09/2025 16:55

Plenty of cleaning companies or just cleaners will do a full house clean. Probably a separate company to shampoo carpets. That relies on you having time on completion before you move in as most house sales are move out and in on the same day unless first time buyers.
Lots of pet owners think their house doesn't smell but to someone who doesn't have pets they really do. If you ask someone whether your house smells they are not going to say yes.

ApolloandDaphne · 04/09/2025 16:55

If you aren't actually paying for any of the house then i don't think you get a say on the previous pet thing. Surely you are just thankful that your DP continue to accommodate you?

pambeesleyhalpert · 04/09/2025 16:56

It’s quite weird…
