Air conditioning, any regrets?

We’re considering putting it in and I just wondered if anyone’s had it installed and regretted it?

I have a through the wall unit, its efficient and a little noise but energy efficient...portable ones are not very efficient and can cost about 60p an hour to run.

@bumblebee1000 Thanks! That’s the type we’re considering in 2-3 rooms of the house.

We have it in our bedroom. No regrets at all. Can also be used to heat in the winter which can be useful too.

HouseHangover · 04/09/2025 06:53

None at all! We have three units - one in each bedroom, split from one external fan unit. It’s bliss and this summer of constant heatwaves hasn’t been an issue for us whatsoever. Also handy for quick burst of heat when it’s cold in winter.

Not a single regret we have 9 units and while it was an investment it is worth it to always be comfortable.

We did this - best thing we ever did to the house.

Can I ask the rough cost you've paid and for how many units? Thanks!

Cyclistmumgrandma · 04/09/2025 11:20

One in the conservatory, makes it useable year round, and one in the bedroom. No regrets, especially as they are used most for cooling in the summer, which is when they are solar powered, so no energy cost.

Just under £5k for three internal units

Pfpppl · 04/09/2025 15:13

Although we don't use ours that much, i love it and it was worth every penny for when we do use it. As others have said, we can also use it for heating in the winter.

user593 · 04/09/2025 17:21

@WallTree Was that in London? We’re budgeting £4k for two units.

Not London, but a similarly expensive city. £4k for 2 units should do it if you shop around and get a few quotes. Our quotes ranged from £4.9k-£7.5k for 3 units.

CMOTDibbler · 04/09/2025 19:28

We have it in 2 bedrooms, but spec'd the outside unit to support another 2 rooms. Best thing we ever did tbh

HouseHangover · 04/09/2025 20:21

just under £4k for 3 inside units and the outdoor fan thing including the installation (2 days work). East Anglia and this was last November.

InveterateWineDrinker · 05/09/2025 10:43

Sorry to jump on the thread, but we're thinking of having it installed too, after deciding that one portable unit being moved from room to room doesn't really cut it during very hot weather.

For six internal units powered by three outside condenser units, we've had one quote so far at c£12.5k (this is Manchester). I've looked up the cost of the plant which comes to a bit over £6k, so four days installation plus their overheads comes to just over £1,500 a day - not outrageous for two blokes plus scaffolding etc. Waiting for other quotes.

I can only imagine regretting it if we have a run of miserable summers without really needing to use them, but it is being done as part of a wider programme installing solar panels to effectively eliminate the running costs, and also to use as air-to-air heat pumps during the winter; it means we can heat one room at a time during the day rather than turn on whole gas central heating zones.
