Renting a lock up space to record

A relative of mine is looking for ideas . They have a very small house and currently have a recording booth in one of the bedrooms. They need the bedroom but have no garage. What sort of options might they have to rent a secure space to install their recording booth from which to work? It needs to be damp free and have electricity .

If they check with storage people should be ok - not sure about electricity

Storage spaces are often not heated so would be very cold to work in. I think in covid lots of people were using cupboards for recording vocal stuff. Is there space for a cupboard to be reused as a booth somewhere in the house?

Is there space for a garden building/shed?

They have a very small garden and two children, so building one would take up half their garden, plus be very expensive.

If they could make a bit of space in the living room or their bedroom would something like this work? With a fold down lid which sits on the two side panels and a fold up back panel so it's completely enclosed? Not ideal but maybe a solution?

There’s absolutely no space in their house , that’s the problem . It’s in a bedroom they need for one of their children at the moment.

You can rent a 40 foot container for about £150 a month where I am. The price may vary depending on what part of the country you live it.

You couldn't use it as a recording studio though because it has no electrics.

If you need somewhere to do business on a short term basis there are serviced offices you can hire, either on a daily or more basis or you could hire a hotel room but really depends on how much equipment you need to move around. There are business centres that will offer rooms on short term leases (probably negotiable).

At the end of the day anywhere with services (electrics) is going to be fairly expensive to rent.

I used to pay about 1K a month for a small serviced office in a business centre.

The cost of a 10K home office installation would be recovered in about 10 months.

A lot of small business owners can often have extra space they don't need for various reasons. With me I always needed to maintain space for big projects but a lot of the time it was empty. If you could find someone you could probably sublet some of their space for occassional use at a cheaper cost. How to find someone would be the problem though.

Maybe you could find someone with a spare room in the locality that would be willing to let you use it.

It does need electricity

Do they need their own studio? Our local youth and community centre rents one out at £50 for 90 mins. Cheaper than renting somewhere

I seem to remember a storage unit we were using also had 'office space' (we were storing and sorting through papers of closed-down businesses). No idea of the cost though.

Ask at your local music shop or music school; my local independent music store has studios for hire.

The lock up might not allow it due to insurance etc and heating/damp being an issue.
