DIY wonky wall help

I'd like to decorate my sons room - wallpaper on the sloping ceiling, paint on the wall and a scalloped trim between the two.

However, my cottage is c.17thC and the lower wall is FAR from square. The lower edge is around 168cm and the other end of the room its 176cm. It also has a dip in the middle.

If I attach the trim level albeit it along the lower line, there'll be a weird space above it- do i wallpaper that section of wall or paint it? Paint above the trim will look absolutely bizarre....

Bit stuck. Any solutions welcome! Pictures attached because its tough to explain the predicament.

Please be kind, im teying my best but don't have the knowledge on how to solve this (I couldn't find the right terms/words for.google)

Having lived in a wonky house, honestly, you can't solve it. Just ditch the trim. Trim is designed to look lovely in straight lines on straight walls. It will look crap on a wonky line. Sorry!

Agree
We have similar issues all over our house
Trims weren’t made for this type of property
Celebrate the wonkeyness

Keep that wall all one colour
You might find that blue is too dark for the room though

Thanks!
Colour is just representing where the paint would go, I had limited options in my picture editor lol

You could put a false wall in above it and straighten that.

The amount of effort it would take would be totally inconsistent with the outcome (to add a bit of trim in).

DrPrunesqualer · 01/09/2025 10:15

Another alternative is to set a trim below where the roof kicks out. Say 100/200mm
Paint the blue below the trim and start the ceiling colour above it.

perhaps Use a trim with hanging pegs so it becomes useful and at a good height for kids to hang stuff

Pepperedpickles · 01/09/2025 10:16

You would be better to just paint the whole wall, slope and all in a neutral colour. Wallpaper on the slope is going to make the room seem a lot smaller and the trim won’t work on a wonky wall,

I logged to say exactly this but @DrPrunesqualer beat me to it :) I’d say more like 200-300mm though (bigger feels more intentional) but the amount it’s offset is going to depend on the dimensions of the room and the size of the trim.

JollyMollyPolly · 01/09/2025 12:09

Could you use something like a scalloped bunting instead of a fixed trim?

Great minds and all that 😊

Ahhh, wallpaper down rather than paint up, sure! @DrPrunesqualer thanks also.

Ill try this!

Re making the room smaller - its a cottage and comfy/cosy is the look we're co.fortsble with. Plan on bring here 40+ years if we are tha lucky so resale is not an issue 😊 Plus, the rooms occupier is 4, sure he won't mind some wonkiness!

Thanks for all the replies.
Im going to attempt something like this (see pic) and attach the fun trim a little lower than where the wall meets the ceiling and carry the paper down to it.

Might be terrible, could be awesome!

Is it going to be possible to paper that wonky shape though? The paper, if straight on the sloping ceiling, won’t be straight when it continues on to the lower section.

I agree (& speak from experience!) It's really hard to wallpaper neatly going around corners if they aren't completely square as you end up with the paper overlapping or gapping after the bend. Even on the flat bit of the ceiling slope I bet it's not even enough to be able to join the sheets neatly and without creases, bubbles etc. I'd just choose two different colours, maybe with the trim too, or even a mural if you are up for it!

What about decorative decals, like a road / track decal, so doesn't have to be level

Just tape off a level line on the wonky wall, on the vertical / short wall a half inch or so from the angle.
Basically make a false level section which you paint or wallpaper. Treat the wonky edge + the half inch below the edge as part of the angled wall. Your eye won't be able to tell the difference.
