Best flooring for open plan space

As boring as it sounds….!

We are currently extending our kitchen to have an open plan kitchen/ dining/ living space. Underfloor heating throughout.

What flooring would work well both with ufh and in a large open plan space (will likely have the same flooring in the hallway, downstairs toilet, open plan space and utility)? I originally wanted herringbone engineered wood flooring, but now wondering if we should consider large stone effect tiles…and if herringbone might look too busy.

Any tips?!

A decent hardwood floor. Looks good in every room, easy to clean.

We have herringbone engineered wood throughout the downstairs, which has a large open plan area and I don't think it looks busy. It's one of the few decisions I found easy and never had second thoughts about once it was done, although I did originally consider tiles and lvt. You need to get the right plank size for the space though, ours also has a matt finish which I think looks better than shiny. Depending how far into the work you could take a picture of the space and get chatgpt to do a mock up with a few different floors.

I had this internal debate few weeks back.
Decided to go with LVT in the living area (using large planks) and large format tiles in the kitchen and dining areas. We will also have a different tile in the entrance hallway. Few transitions but all flooring sort of make sense and because they are all in larger formats, it won’t look too busy.

You need something waterproof in the kitchen. Ours isn’t and it’s a disaster. Don’t put anything that can’t handle regular drips and the odd mini flood. Kids do stuff, dishwashers break.
